Which Ram and why.

I’ve been looking to start my first proper PC build, due to this I’ve found myself spending hours on the web looking at parts, constantly chopping and changing my mind on what parts to get and why.

But I have to say the absolute bane of my life has been RAM, just looking at this stuff makes my face want to go on a date with my desk, and trust me it wont be pretty…

Seriously its driving me nuts, I just don’t get it.

The motherboard I’m opting for is the “Asus Crosshair IV Formula” the board looks stunning and it got a great review on the You Tube channel paired up with an “AMD Phenom II x6 1090”, looking further into this when checking the RAM compatibility it states that the board can take.

DDR3 - 1066

DDR3 - 1333

DDR3 - 1600(OC)

DDR3 - 1800(OC)

DDR3 - 1866(OC)

I don’t get it, dose this mean that the board can only handle cards at the frequency’s given, or can you put 2000mgz RAM in and it will only perform at 1333 unless I Over clock it?

My second issue is to do with the timings.

I often see the ram timings as 8 - 7 - 8 - 27 to me this means absolutely nothing, even after reading the Ram for dummies my face still wants to go on a date with my desk.

What’s more important, the size of the numbers or how close they are together which judges how well the ram will perform, if its how close the numbers are is this what you refer to when you say tight?

Which leads me to my final question, since ive been here lurking around, as creepy as that sounds, I’ve been wondering, Why Mushkin, what is it about this stuff that makes it so good besides the smaller heat sync?

TL:DR

If you don’t want to read that essay of questions heres the important parts.

lower timings will get u faster speeds and higher clock speeds get u more bandwidth i think

and y mushkin? cause there the best out there (cas6) beating out corsair dom gt's @ both 1600 and 2000mhz

Ahh thank you

Ahh so currently Mushkin have the fastest speeds? ok thank you, so when looking for ram i should look for lower timings, sounds easy enough.

which brings me to my next brain boggling.

Will any Ram work with my Crosshair IV Formula or should i only use whats on the QVL?

Doing some more upgrades aswell, hey I was look around and I want 2 more ssds i currently have a 60gb vertex 2 I paid 159 for it

but i was thinking to get 2 more or get a 120gb version but its cheaper to get 2 more 60gb if i raid the 2 will it be faster then the 120gb one? im assuming yes

1: the ram problem is common just take the ram out clean it and refit. same with the cpu or look for memory mapping in bios.

2: TRIM does not work in raid with ssd's so they will get well slow in no time.

Lol...I've been having the same problem with desktop memory and almost the same MOBO except i will be using the Crosshair 4 Extreme with 16 Gig's of ram and an AMD phenom II X6 1090T Cpu.

The specs list 4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory

Dual Channel memory architecture

*Due to CPU spec., AMD 100 and 200 series CPUs support up to DDR3 1066Mhz. With ASUS design, this motherboard can support up to DDR3 1333MHz.

I'm also not understanding whats going on with corsairs memory types. I wanted to use Dominator Gt's for my AMD build as did TinyTom in one of his reviews but Corsair is saying that the DOM GT's are only for Intel Core I5's - I7's and that the Domnator II's (ugly green...Bleh) are for AMD set ups. I didnt see any 2000 Mghz modules in either catagory.

Now that my Personal memory is fragged...If anyone can clear this up a little more for me, I would appreciate it...
