Which card for me?

Im finally getting around to upgrading (getting rid of my POS gigabyte motherboard ) so it's time to say farewell to my Gainward 6800GT AGP which has served me well.

Looking at the prices around various stores, i could get a X1900XT for 260, or i could get a 7900GT for 210.

So which would the best value?

I will be watercooling the card, and trying to keep it for quite some time (probably 1-2 years). The more i spend the longer i will try to hold onto the card.

Other suggestions are always welcome, i have been out of the loop for a while with exams, hence the consultative thread.

Unless the newer batches have been tweaked, avoid the 7900GT like the plague. The voltage regulation is all to blazes and a lot (officially 10%+) of cards are failing.

That leaves the X1900

I haven't seen figures anywhere near that amount and yes the new batches have been changed. MY BFG voltage regulators are cool to the touch even after a hard gaming session. The 7900GT is a fantastic card and should be seriously considered.

How are the newer batches defined? How wide-spread are they? I`ll admit the failures were mainly with the overclocked ones...and thats most of the big makers.

I cant reccommend the GT to anyone, not anyone I liked.

The cards are an awsome buy when they work... Quite often it seems they don't though!

Not had any issues with this EVGA card so far (touch wood) tempted to pick up another and see how it fares.

X1xxx series card is a safer bet than a GT, kinda feel the same way as Kenny about them at the mo..

if you going to get a 7900gt you might as well get a 2nd hand 7800gtx...the gtx wont die and can OC well past 7900gt stock speeds...only difference is its not 90nm

x1900xt or x1900gt are both good buys atm too

I've brought 3 7900GTs (one for me and 2 for friends) and its a BFG overclocked ones and its been fine since day one. You think you only hear about the crappy ones and not the vast number of happy users

Most of the 7900GTs that had a problem have been wittled out and replaced so newer ones are fine afaik.

Well i've gone for the x1900xt, it arrived today, but i didnt realise that it didnt come with a molex to 6pin adaptor, so now i need to get hold of one.

Does anyone know somewhere that will have them on the highstreet (rather than buying it online where the postage will probably be more than the part)? I was so looking forward to playing with this lot today well

Did you try Maplins or PCW? If not a ma and pa type shop

If you dont have a PCI-E connector on your PSU - I would be concerned, it's likely that it will not provide enough power to the high end GPU.

I 'could' be wrong though - just a heads up if stability or artifacts are an issue.

It should be fine, it's a PCP&C 510 Deluxe, i bought one before PCI-E came to the market in a big way so it doesnt have a PCI-E connector, but i think it should be able to handle the rig, it isnt a question of the PSU not having the power, it was that all cards had molex connectors when i bought it.

I luckily remembered that a friend of mine bought a spare molex to PCI-E connector by accident when he built his computer, so i'm going to buy it off him today (woohoo no shipping costs which were indeed more than the cable) over a few beers and the footie.
