What to buy?

+1 to Pexon for that. 80s are much better for your applications.

BTW, I just realised that Beyerdynamics make the legendary DT 100s, which of course I've encountered many times. IMO, they sounded terrible and are seriously uncomfortable but for studio monitoring when tracking (e.g., so the drummer can hear the backing track/click track while recording) they are simply amazing, with very little bleed and as much volume as you could every need.

Products designed for a specific purpose that do it exceedingly well; bodes well for them. As I said before, they wouldn't be my personal choice but I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with them either; on paper, they're really good headphones and should perform very well.

Wow, this thread went from a budget headset, speakers and sound card to a uber high end professional quality headset and $200 sound card. Beyerdynamic make some of the best professional audio equipment available. If you are studying audio production then they would be a good investment, but if you are just using them to listen to music then you would be wise to spend your money elsewhere.

That sounds about right :)

On about £270 now and I havent even put speakers on.
I think the difference here is either gunna be buying something cheapish anyway, or buying something very high end. Like if I dont get the Essence, then I'll probably just be saving money and staying with on-board with some cheapish headphones.....which is what I already have - and so there wouldnt even be a point upgrading.
If it's what I need to spend then fair enough - I dont mind buying the headphones and living on integrated audio until I can afford better - and other than adding pointless screens and SLI to power triple screens there arent really any other upgrades I can make to my PC

....even though that kind of just sounds like I dont do anything with my life apart from computers....

...true.

True that, you already have a very nice system. What ever you buy I am sure it will be good.

I dont know everything about sound bro, when I take on a new hobby, I learn about it as much as possible, same with PCs, headphones, bass guitars, photography, fishing etc.

And that's why your advice is good - because you took the time and persevered yourself to learn about it.
Anyway - cheque is clearing in the bank - as soon as it does I'll order stuff :)

Got the Essence STX today - it sounds so so clear.

One question though - it says the amp in it can take up to 600 Ohm headphones?

Surely that would mean I could get the 250 Ohm headphones over the 80s?
Or am I missing something here?

Dude, so glad you like the Essence, you can power up to 600Ohm yes, but an it draws power from a PCI-E 1x slot and not a proper power socket, so IMO won't be as powerful as a fully pledged stereo/headphone amp. By all means go for the 250's, you should be relatively comfortable with the 770's at 250.

It has a molex power in the back.
I've ordered the 80s - reviews said they were better anyway :)

Do you have the essence too? When you switch between headphones and speakers does it click like it's physically changing connections? I'm guessing it's meant to...

Happy so far anyway - the audio through the speakers is such good quality and so clear. I had a play with my turtle beaches and didnt really notice much difference. Also had a fun play with iPod headphones......which kind of broke slightly :p

Have the 770DTs now too :D

The quality is just perfect and they are so comfortable.
Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Just got speakers to sort out now - not sure what I'm gunna do with them though
