What SSD to get?

Christmas is soon and i don't really know what to wish for, so why not wish for an SSD?

So yeah... what SSD should i get? It has to be ~128gb. My motherboard only has Sata 3gb/s connectors, but i will upgrade to Ivy-Bridge when it comes out. I'd get a Kingston HyperX if it wasn't plagued by the instability issues, but haven't they been fixed? The Samsung 830 is also really nice, and so is the Crucial M4, but i'd like some better write speeds. Any other choices out there other than the SandForce drives? Thanks.

P.S any other ideas for what to wish for? I don't really need anything...

Sandforce is slowly getting better, though isn't quite there yet, if you want the fastest SSD you are going to have to risk Sandforce really.

Reliability wise, the internet heavily recommends the Crucial M4 (having literally just been in the same position as you, I've spent a couple of weeks looking). Intel's are also pretty reliable.

I went for the M4 as it is very reasonably priced, recommended as being very reliable and the read/write speeds are not slow by any means.

I'd have a look at the Mushkin Chronos. Got mine nice and cheap (£130) and it hasn't missed a beat as yet. And that's on the 770-UD3 as well.

I'd definitely recommend the Mushkin Chronos. Among others, Corsair Performance or the Force 3 series are pretty good drives. The Kingston V200 series are out and those look like something I'd consider for a decent upgrade from a regular hard drive.

I would say Mushkin Chronos first or the new Samsung 830.

Yup, I'm definitely a fan of the Mushkin SSDs now. After trying out a few different manufacturers, I think I made the right choice for getting myself a Mushkin Chronos.

All good suggestions tbh. Mushkin and Crucial seem to be the most reliable drives, but as was said above, there has been a lot of talk about how reliable the Crucial M4 is. On paper it may seem slower than similarly priced drives, but in real world scenarios it performs similarly (from what I've read and seen) to drives that have faster read/write speeds on paper.

Thanks for the replies

I don't know whether i should choose the Samsung 830 or the Crucial M4. The Mushkin Chrono isn't out in my country, and it's a SandForce drive which i don't really trust. Is the performance difference between the Samsung and the Crucial really that small?

You probably won't notice any real world performance difference.

I myself was asking the same question and decided to buy it, it's on the way

The OCZ drives are also great quality, but it's nice to have a bit of diversity too am I right?

That's awesome. Hope you enjoy the drive. SSDs are so fast now it's hard to go back to using a regular hard drive for the OS.
