What should my temps be

cheers dude,yo have been a awsome help,i guess i just expected lower temps with it being 40nm

it does seem like a powerful card for its position,been playing deadspace and fear 2 ATM,when i get some cash i will get dirt 2 so i can see what you mean.

also i do think it is the summer temps as when i opend the window above my case the GPU temps droped to 50c (its never been that low),so i am goin to stick a 120mm noctua fan on the sidepanel facing the GPU and stick it at 12v.

just 93c 100% load in furmark blew me away,but i plwayed with heaven for about 20min and it maxed out at 75c at 50% fan speed.

i must get a thermometet to see my room temp

yer but thats 65nm lol i expect that my 9800gtx would quite happily sit at 90c lol (max temp for them is 115c)

BTW. Noctua = quiet and amazingly well made. That bodes well on their recent coolers but don't expect them to set the world on fire in a performance rig. They are made to be quiet and don't shift the CFM you will get out of a high performance fan. Yes high performance fans are noisy but they do the job needed in gaming rigs. I have Noctua fans and I had to replace them when I had my 280.

I brought a complete set of fans for my case for £19. Shipped. I got these

They shift 30% more air than the Noctuas. Yes they are significantly louder but I would rather that than failing components or worrying idle temps.

hmmm yer TBH i have only used noctuas they shift around 56cfm i thought that was quite good for a 120mm

but i will have a look around for better fans.

also what overclocks have you had on your 5770's

and is there any aftermarket coolers for them

I have had my 5770s WAY overclocked. Last week I pushed them really hard for an extra 1500 3DM in Vantage. TBH though as I have maintained, the gains in gaming would be lovely on paper but in the real world you wouldn't notice. I would only push them that hard again when they are at the end of their shelf life and really need it just to make a game playable.

Not sure on aftermarket coolers but beware of the Arctic range. I read a group test recently and one of them killed a card and the others all had problems with the memory sinks falling off. Apparently for the cheap end the Akasa Vortex Neo wins hands down but tbh the stock coolers on the 5 series are pretty bloody good tbh. What I would reccomend if you are dead set on a permanent OC is to look up the stock settings for the XXX model and set it there

The fans I linked you to (my arctics) give 70 or so CFM. They do spin quite fast though so make more noise (plus they have more blades than my Noctuas do). Noctuas for quality though IMO are unsurpassed, they really are wonderful. Even their cable braiding is heavy and waxy.

Hah ! I just looked up the cooler you linked to (the Arctic one) and that was the one that killed a GPU. Also it's a nightmare to mount and remove and they ended up having to dremel it off.

Those Kaze fans are close to the Arctics in performance. However note that they are basically the same, don't look as nice (IMO) and cost double.

The best GPU cooler in class is the Scythe Setsugen. However it costs... Wait for it.... £40. Putting that on a 5770 is like pouring perfume on a pig. A complete waste of money, basically.

You can try the Vortex neo thing (I think it's spelled Vortexx) but I don't even know it that fits the 5770 or if it would improve. Personally mate I feel you just need to feed it more cold air. I dropped almost 10c by performing this simple mod to a case with poor airflow using a 8800GTX and a bracketted 120mm Yate right up its bum.

i had one of them vortexx neo's on my 8800gt they are poo lol cooled ok but man they are loud

yer i might have to mod it abit,i have my 5770 idle at 49c stock with a side noctua fan

so u say them arctic fans over the kaze ones

the kaze push around 10cfm more than the arctics,also looks dont fuss me lol more performance over looks in the fan dept

Well the Kaze say 70CFM (cubic feet of air a minute.. I learned this when fitting turbo chargers to my car ) and the Arctics state 50 odd. Mine are 1800RPM and shift 68 IIRC but they don't seem to have any :S

So, I would get these. 72CFM. I have a sneaking suspicion they're rebranded Yates. But that doesn't matter 'cos they're half the price of the Kaze and shift more air.

Don't use the inline resistor it lowers the speed. If you are using them on your Noctuas remove them, they really slow the fans down and cut the CFM drastically.

Oh and 49c idle is perfectly respectable for a 5770. I know it's not the 38 that some people have gotten but hey, it's WELL within safe operating temps. Do some gaming on it and leave a program logging the temps. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how little they rise during a gaming session.

Those Kaze are not going to give you a boost over the Noctuas I fear and the Arctics are too slow. Infact the Arctics are about dead the same as the Noctua as they are not the ones I am using (mine are 1800RPM and shift 70s).

Yes yes they look the same as the ones you have posted. However, get this -

Scythe Slip Stream 1900 - 1900 RPM, far more like it for taming the summer, you can always slow them in winter with the inline resistors from your Noctuas.

i have looked at them but over 30Db thats loud lol

also i have just ran heaven benchmark with the settings (in attachments) and loged temps with HW monitor it maxed out at 83c also its mad hot hear say around 23-27c ambiant so i dont no what to expect,my cpu temp has risen by 6c at idle lol

I've solved the mystery of the three temp GPU thing. Look at this pic.

Note there are two GPU temps? One is your actual main GPU (the hottest one ) the other is the RAMDAC temp and the last one is the temp for the card's PCB (board). So job done there. As for those fans being noisy? get a fan controller.

i added a powerful side fan,and also added another fan at the front of the case,no temp drops lol

so if the top one is the GPU core then why is it a different temp

Mind you I have both of my windows open and a fan perched on the windowledge dragging in what little cool air is available ATM

I'm sure I mentioned it before but I live right on the coast. So much so that it's usually around 4-5c less than London as an example.

Just popping by to break you conversation combo you had going chaps, and to say well done for getting to the bottom of it.

There's a couple of things to say really. Firstly, don't EVER flash the BIOS in windows unless it's the last remaining option. It's not as safe and has screwed up many people's boards. Of course, it's usually fine but it's not a lot of fun if you do end up with a corrupt BIOS.

Secondly, there don't seem to be any dedicated 3rd party coolers for the 5770 that I've seen, but there are some compatible. However, the 5xxx series cards seem to be very easily damaged by 3rd party cooler installation, so I'd be very wary of this if you ever decide to go down that route.

Also, the 5770 in my machine right now is idling at 45 deg C. That seems fine to me and nothing to worry about, plus my case doesn't have the best airflow. My card is a totally reference ATI card (actually an engineering sample) that I won from OC3D last year now! I've had it a couple of months now and am currently benchmarking that and my GTX280, and then will be doing 5770CF. Taken a bit longer than I thought due to exams and life getting in the way though. Results should be around soon, I'll make a new thread anyway if you're interested.

thanks for your input fella,yer my temps are just down to the hot humid weather,once agin it was at 44c at about 12am

this is why water looks good even if i just watercooled the GPU as my CPU has never got to hot

do you think that would be a good idea or pointless lol

also i always use EZ-flash its awsome
