Hi,

I'm trying to set up my home network so I can transfer|stream everything from all my systems to all my other systems.

Since I also use the main pc for gaming and rendering and a lot of other stuff, It has to be a program, not an os. If it is possible to let my main pc do the rendering on thing I made with e.g. my laptop, that's a big bonus.

In my network, I have a main rig ( storage, computing), 3 laptops, a smaller pc and some android devices.

What software would you recommend ?

thx

Buy a SAN/NAS

Sorry but that would be my recommendation. You can use windows operating systems to share providing you don't mind being treated like an idiot and jumping through hoops to set file/folder permissions and you'll also need identical accounts on all machines if you don't run a client/server system.

By using network storage you will find it easier to manage/install and all you need to do within your windows environment is mount it as a network drive (it'll ask you for authentication if you set it up properly, but it's a one shot deal once you've connected the first time)

Desktop software solutions (non client/server) will essentially do the same as windows file/folder sharing, they'll just do it with a prettier gui and without telling you what permissions/policies they are setting.

I use Windows, therefore I concede the fact Microsoft already assume I'm an idiot for doing so.

Have to be fair tho, sharing isn't as hard as needing lots of accounts. Sure you'll need to setup l/p if you want security for different shares - heck you'll need that no matter what you use if you want security. But if you want it all open you can use "Everyone" user template.

not really getting what you wanna do exactly. do you intend to store all your data in a centralized location and accessing it from all the devices you mentioned? or do you just want to stream stuff from your regular desktop computer to all the other devices?

wow didn't know people were still replying to this one as i'ts an old threat. I'm glad to say it's all working great at the moment. the whole point was to have all static media stored in one place I can acces from any pc or mobile device at home (over lan) and away (over good old Tonido) at the moment I have a Tonido pro license and the pc is running windows 8. The most awesome part is that I can also share online with friends without the bandwidth limitations you have trough skype, msn, etc.
