Yep, I reckon so...

Crucial ballistix sticks use the same legendary Micron D9GMH chips and should clock to a similar degree, if you want another option.

If you want, iirc both kits are the same price and the 8500's are obviously faster to start so more likey to hit higher speeds.

How about this, Crucial DDR2 BallistiX PC8500 2048MB CL5 ,Kit w/two matched BallistiX 128Megx64

The cellshocks ham linked are PC2-6400 (DDR2-800) and CL4 as opposed to PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) and CL5. The former have tighter/faster timings, but the latter have faster bus speeds.

I'm no expert with memory timings and overclocking so I'll let someone else argue the merits of faster timings or faster bus speeds. I think it depends whether you're overclocking or not and what the ratio is between your CPU bus and memory bus. It's all a bit complex ;)

In the specs for your mobo it doesn't mention compatibility with PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) but it does mention that it's compatible with CPU FSB speeds of 1333, 1066, 800, etc..

Once you start overclocking I'm not sure what specs/rules still apply. Many people are running memory at bus speeds well above their mobo or memory rated values.

The cellshocks Ham linked are £ 95.15 inc. VAT. On crucials website I see:

PC2-6400 (DDR2-800) CL4 £65.79 inc. VAT*

PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) CL5 £86.94 inc. VAT*

So, the crucial PC2-6400 memory is cheaper than the cellshock (for the same stuff - assuming it clocks as well?) but also cheaper for the PC2-8500 stuff...

Just did a google and found this..

http://www.eclipseoc.com/index.php?id=1,99,0,0,1,0

"For example, breaking 600MHz on a motherboard with a 975x chipset is very rare, while good 965x and 680i boards can easily do over 600MHz"

So it seems like your 680i board should clock well with the crucial memory.

Something I thought but wasn't positive of is that "Crucial is a part of Micron" so I guess that explains the cheaper prices for crucial ram with micron chips.

If you wanted some ram sticks with bling you could get the tracers for £91.64 inc. VAT.

Which would benefit his oc aspirations 6400 or 8500 ?

Or does that depend on what his mobo will allow him to do vS the cpu ?
