What killed my p4c800-e?

Hey guys, my p4c800-e-d is dead and has been since early last week. Im waiting on an RMA decision from asus atm, any one had any exp with regards to their "stringency"?

Would like to here your thoughts on what may have killed it...

When i left it it would power on but not post, i could here the HDD's initialise then that was it. Checked V's with my multimeter and they were all fine and where i left them.

-Ive just seen a post that says u should put seal string on the freezer head screws, i never did and had been running the same mobo like this for around 2 months.

-Ive done pretty much every mod under the sun with the kit.

-prommie mods to lower profile of mount kit (cable ties, sanding on top plate for chips on mofset, back plate of cpu kit is attached direct to mobo with seal string around perim

-vdimm + vdroop on mobo. I cut one slim channel in top plate of machII kit for wires from the vdroop and used extra seal string where wires came out. Both these mods gave me great results.

When the board died i had been running this for around a week.....

292 fsb with 3.0 sl6wu 1.75 Vcore

GEIL 1GB 3.2 V with 2-3-3-6 everything else memory related @ max

When it died i had just set the AGPVDDQ to 1.7 left it 1/2 an hour came back and comp was locked, the next boot never post'ed

The chip and mem are both still fine, ill have a decsion from asus on monday.

Will be interested with ur thoughts / wild speculation on this one :)

i dont think it look that bad like my P4C800E? :p when it died

as i said int he other thread...did you see any signs of water drops in the front of the cpu kit?

my droop mod is fine..no condensation

nothing on the front, however on the back directally underneith the cpu socket the metal caps had green grimy stuff on it. Not much but it was evident. I cleaned it all up and hair dry'ered the solder off from my mods b4 sending back to asus :)

maby with the nxt install i should use grease on back of mobo?...

you never saw my mushroom did you?

on the back of my PC800E?

green...and huge..killed the board...

people over at XS got amazed for not having seen something like that before :p

thats what killed it mate...exactly the same as in my board....

mine wouldnt post any more...it just died....everything else working....

So dude what did u do on new install to prevent this? A lot of peeps talk about greaseing socket and back of mobo....

- nb I will mod it straight away this time going for a slightly bigger trimmer on droop mod as well

was there anything on the back b4 gorby? such as laquer spray of what ever that water proof spray is called... (its 2am and im tired but still working (sort of :P)

i used pcb laquer in mine...many times...

guess what just died

my board again :(

condensation on the back of the board again...will be offline for several days :(

Are both your heating pads working ok?

Anyhow as posted before this is what I got and use:

Get some Dielectric grease and cover the area on the back in a thick layer.

Try to keep it away from the seal string though as it soon removes its stickyness.

This is what I did:

'You can get this from http://www.farnell.co.uk

3821407 PLASTIC COAT SPRAY 200ML Volume 200 ml £3.55

537019 SILICONE COMPOUND 100G DOW CORNING (DC4) £3.60

3821456 COLDKLENE DEGREASER 200ML Volume 200 ml

You get a clear waterproof coating for the PCB, a dielectric grease for the socket and a cleaner (recommend for removal of clear coating)

The beauty of this is you get everything you need to condensation-proof the board and socket, farnell has a minumum order for credit cards, £10 before VAT, and this comes to £10.11 (took me a while to find the products that would take me to 10 quid) and then you get free delivery. Total cost £11.88'

wow thats cheap!

ferret so how often is ure PC on and at wot speed is it at? i think i may do what you have done

6 hours a night, 4GHz.

Its just in case though, only £10 or so and like 10 mins to prepare the board. I checked the back last week and all was fine. The grease is as easy to apply as it is to remove from the back.

These problems sound very similar to my max3 woes, although i never find any condensation in my rear cover.I'm still not sure what is causing it,and i've already tried dc4 and double sealing.Currrently, i'm trying to rma my mach2,then i will try again.

no one puts the grease in the socket tho? Ive seen chips coated with the stuff...

cheers ferret ill order the bits and do as you say.

Nice one mate...

i used pcb laquer buddy...

and i mean a HUGE coating...i am having trouble cleaning my board....

what i am thinking of is covering the socket area on the back with SEAL STRING :D

i got 3 rolls here...a thin area will do the job dont you think?

i am just annoyed by the fact that i paid for 2 canisters of laquer and used nearly half bottle and that didnt stop it at all...

if i use grease on my next board the area near the seal string that doesnt get covered will still have probs right?

my last dead asus had melted a solder in the middle...

last 3 times i noticed condensation was in the right hand side of the board...

i cant understand why i am getting condensation + why others with double layer of seal strinf from the outside are getting probs too...

i mean is it a board thing or something...lol

seriously i was thinking of getting thr ic7 max 3 yesterday but its voltages are bad if you dont mod the board too...

i am really running out of ideas...

Some people do, I put some in the middle of the socket but none touching the chip, probably safer to do so though. A good spray of the degreaser and it all melts away, I think its very different than the Vapochill grease people think of (although I do not know first hand). I put about 4 coats of plastic spray on the whole back beforehand and a thick layer of grease over the area inside the backplate covers.

I also use the grease with foam on my pelted gfx card. Really though if you put this stuff on the water will never break through it.

wot about silicon thingies, you know the stuff that comesin the box wen you buy something to stop condensation/damp, surely that wud be good too?

Those silicate bags aren't up to the condensation that could form on the mobo
