What graphics card?

Hey guys,

So before any of you ask, I don't have an budget here, but to set a limit, an Titan Z is a bit too much really. And SLI or Xfire isn't really my cup of tea.

I'm planning on going for an ASUS ROG Swift 27" 1440p monitor and looking for a graphics card that cope games at that resolution with High settings, as I don't see a point for Ultra, in games such as Battlefield.

Surround gaming or tripple monitor/eyefinity, is not something for me. I'll just get the Swift and have that for games. Maybe have 1 or 2 more monitors just for side ones, ie have for programs such as Teamspeak etc.

I do have an GTX 980 that I will try and return as recently discovered that within a year, this card won't be enough and 4GB isn't enough. And have recently gotten the advice to sort of "future proof", I'd recommend to go all out and get an Titan X.

I do like the look of the Titan X, only downside is the green LED on it. Since my PC is black and blue.

I've gone with an Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X earlier, the leds on the back of the PCB did my head in while under different kinds of load, going crazy all of the place.

So my question for you guys are this... which graphics card would you recommend me?

My specs are as follows:

i7 4790K 4.0GHz
ASUS Gryphon Z97 Armor Edition
32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 1600MHz
Sapphire 6950 2GB
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
Corsair Force Series 3 180GB
Corsair HX750i
BitFenix Aegis

So yeah... what graphics card would you recommend me etc, based on all of this?.

I know that this might not be the "ultimate" information for you all... but hope you can get me some recommendations though.

Thanks,
Chrazey

If you can hang onto the 980 for now and see what the new 390x is like and the new 980Ti and go from there

Things is that I might get to return the 980 now and not later down the line, then I'm stuck with an £60 card.

But is it confirmed regarding the 980Ti?...

980ti is not confirmed officially, but people are pretty damn sure it will exist and it makes sense as a potential 390X killer. It'll just be a Titan X with half the Vram so it should be perfect for 1440p.

Just keep your 980.

I'm not saying anything else on this thread, I know you respect my opinion and that is my angle. Keep your 980 and buy the Swift then in 6 months or a years time think about what option to go with again. 4GB is enough vram for 1440p and it's definitely more than a single 980 core can handle. Don't PM me about it, i've said what i'm going to. Just read it several times if you need to.

IMO the 980 is not going to drop that much in price over the next year.
Something that could change that i guess is a AMD offering that is as good or better for a ridiculously low price.

Personally i would be relatively confident that the 980 will hold its price well enough that i could sell it for a HIGH % of the price i paid for it in a year.
I do not see the 980 being a £60 card for a LONG LONG LONG time..
and we will probably be looking at a new gen of consoles before that happens.

I do understand what you say about 4gb being seeming to be a low amount of ram in the upcoming years.
But when that comes arround there are a LOT of 1080p gamers who would happily buy a 4gb 980..
really if you look at the second hand market now even a lowly old hd 7850 or GTX 680
still command a reasonably respectable price compared to the release price.
Its not like it was in the past..
I do know dx 12 is coming but a 980 will not be made obsoleet with dx 12. and will only ever perform better with it.

cards these days seem to hold their prices a LOT better then in the past..
you have to go back to a hd 5770 to find a reasonable gaming card at a really low price now. and even one of those is £60 on average on a certain bidding site..

So I honestly would not worry about the depreciation of the card..
the only way they will drop a lot in value really is if amd release something great at a low price forcing the retail down.

I purchased a 980 a couple of weeks ago, I was somewhat in the same boat and wasn't sure if I should wait for the new AMD Series,

However, I think it's probably a bit too early to say that 4GB is obsolete. Yes, games are using a hell of a lot of VRAM these day's but as technology advances so does new techniques, For example nVidia has TXAA which produces 4x MSAA quality at the same performance impact as 2x

So maybe we'll see more optimized usages of the VRAM in the near future :)

TC, I see nothing wrong with a gtx980 for 1440p gsync. It can run almost everything smoothly and unless you crank up the AA extremely high, 4gb vram is going to be sufficient.
