What gfx card?

Hi there,

I'm in the planning stages of a new build and I'm making my first build a fairly budgeted one. My other half spent about £800 on his new build, but mines to be more the £500-600 mark.

I'm not someone who plays the FPS games, as I've got no reaction times what-so-ever! So I'm more into the Rise of Nations, SPORE, C&C side of the gaming arena..

So far I've got the plan of:

  • Asus Skt-775 P5k-e Wifi-ap S/l 1333FSB
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E7200
  • 2GB HyperX DDR2-1066 Non ECC
  • Akasa AK-ZEN-01-WH Rev.4 Zen White Case
  • EZ Cool 600W SLI Ready PSU - 12cm Fan, 2x PCI-E, 20+4pin, 1x SATA
  • Samsung 750GB 7200RPM S300 32MB 3.5"
  • Optiarc AD-7200S 20X DVD±RW/DL/RAM Internal SATA Bare Black Drive (Might change due to case being white!)
  • Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 Processor Cooler

My other half is usually who I'd be quizzing, but he's just gone and got a new iPhone, so as you can imagine it's getting far more interest than this! haha!:p

The gfx card I've got down as a possible atm is:

Asus GeForce 9600GT SLI 512MB GDDR3 HDTV Dual DVI/TVO PCI-E Graphics Card - I'm not sure about this though.. but the BFG brand is just so expensive for what I'll mainly use it for..

It'll be heavily based on gaming but will also have to deal with day-to-day type use, such as music and films..

But to answer the question directly, yes. It will be a gaming type PC!
 
If u could narrow urself down to a cash amount just for the card, it'd be a heck of alot easier.

If it's the case that the other things are more important than the gfxcard, then maybe get them finalized pricewize and see what u got left. Ish.

Yeah, that's a good point! The list I have currently incl. Keyboard, Desk & Monitor comes to the grand total of: £512.33

The gfx card I'd been looking at is - £82.24. So, I'm thinking for the gfx card alone I'd spend an absolute max of £100.

Bearing in mind at the moment, the hardest game it'd deal with is Spore. But I'm very gfx oriented with games.. I've not had a computer that has been able to play games I like at full whack. So I'm hoping for one that can do that now. The monitor I've chosen is a 19" screen (if that helps any more?)

Will you be OCing the cards or will you keep them stock? If stock, a cheap 9800GT at about £90 might be worth a look, if overclocking, the 9600GT has been known to out perform the 9800GT
 
By the way... I don't know what anyone else things of them as they haven't mentioned it, but I reckon scrap that PSU straight up....

EZ Cool from my experience aren't something I'd be looking to hook a load of new hardware up to. While 600w is more than enough and you might get lucky and get a decent PSU from a cheapo brand, I don't think it's worth the risk.

I had a 500w EZ Cool blow up on me about three years ago... Bloody thing only cost me £30 or so. I now know better :rolleyes:
 
Its a little bit cheap look at around £40 for 500w, but generally look at 10% of your build price being PSU, unless your build is over £1500 or under £300. Its the most important component in determining stability
 
That's a good tip.. thanks for telling me about the risks with the PSU!

I'd originally chosen a more expensive one, but I thought I'd go by reviews.. now I know better! :)
 
Well it's not likely you'll have to spend that much for a quality PSU. Some good quality ones can be had a very good prices.

I don't know where you're looking to buy your parts from but from your specs, even a quality 400W would be enough.

For cheap PSU's I've found Silverpower to do decent products:

Never used this one but I've heard it does a good job. Just bought 2 for a couple of friends builds I have to put together next week with similar hardware. If you were willing to spend a little more and wanted a few more watts for headroom then a nice lil corsair would do the trick (which comes with a 5 year warranty):

Or if you wanted 550W with future upgrades in mind, then the next Corsair up would be very good.

Silverpower are decent solid budget psus imo. If ur buying under 600w, they're ideal.

Only say budget cos that seems to be their target pricing. Havent seen anything budget-like about the quality.
