wet sanding

I am attempting to paint the side panel of my old computer and cant get a straight answer from people. I have expience with painting but not getting a mirrior finsih.

so striaght to the question do you re apply a clear coat after every sanding session eg starting at 800grit

-800 grit

-re apply clear coat

-1200 grit

-re apply clear coat

-2000 grit

- reapply clear coat

or do you just have one clear coat get it extremly smooth then rubber compound and buff?

If you are using cans I wouldnt wet sand between as it either wont be thick enough or will be so thick it wont have set properly.

If you 2000 grit at the end you will still need 2 different polishing compounds to get it even remotely scratch free and without a tool you will be there for a long time doing it by hand.

Its really not as simple as you would think to get it properly mirrored up.

When I prepped redwrath that I did for Jim it took me ALL day aka a good 10hours straight to get it all prepped and polished.

i'm planning on spending about a month, i have buffing tools. I will be waiting 4 weeks minimum after buff to apply glaze then wax so to let the paint set. Do you reconmend anything else other then what i've said to improve my finish? and while the rubbing compound be sufficent?

You need 2000 grit then course and fine rubbing compounds dude, plus a machine to do it with.

Lots of water, and also apply the compound ONCE dont keep adding to it as its designed to breakdwon and get finer, if you keep putting more on then you are just putting courser back on and have to start the breakdown process again.

are the two rubbing compunds very nessisary i have just your average, it does not specify, thanks for the tip i have a habit of overdoing it.

if you want it mirrored then its 100% needed. the 2000 grit will scratch up the surface and make it dull, you need the two compounds to do it properly which is the finish you fist asked about

Depends on the paint and the ambient temp matey.

You dont want to be touching wet paint do you, plus your hands are covered in natural oil

No mate it depends on what you are using and where you are painting it.
