Would this be worth the upgrade from a Caviar black 1tb? I think even as a storage drive it's a little slow...

caviar green = 5400rpm

caviar black = 7200rpm

velociraptor = 10,000rpm+

as they get faster, they get more expensive, hotter, and ALOT louder.

but with these being released, sata6bps HDDs are getting closer to the throughputs that SATAIII enables

as with competing with SSDs... well, i see 1gb drives just around the corner, and that should leave HDDs being shortly extinct.

wow.... 1 TB at 10,000rpm HDD... very2 tempting

juz wait

and see how it perform also the price range to launch.

several years ago I paid $279 for 74G raptors when I could of got 300G 7400RPMdrives for $69!

they will be expensive, but its nice to see they are giving us options for our slow mass storage needs. It will be good for people who want faster storage in large volumes but can's justify SSDs that big ,500G SSDs still cost $600.

I would wait for the reviews to se how they compare to the black drives, they will be better, but probably not enough to justify the price delta.

Probably £299 lol

I've been suggested around $300. That could be without any trade taxes or what-not. And is an interesting price seeing as they're still milking Thai floods as an excuse to keep drive prices up.

Like to see some speed checks on these before I propose them to anyone.

If the price is true, it's in the ball-park of a regular 1TB drive, a 64/128g SSD and the likes of a Seagate drive-cache thing. These setups work well enough.

I used to have a 74GB Velociraptor years ago, it was quite loud! My current 300GB Velociraptor I have had a few years is quiet.

I have a 500GB 7200rpm drive for backup storage, my next investment will be a 240GB+ SSD.

I am sure their will be a market for this drive, but my days of using a Velociraptor are numbered for sure, time to move on.

Personally I'd not consider one of these. It's not good as a storage drive due to acoustics and price. A 1.5TB or 2TB eco would serve better in that regard. And an SSD say 120GB for £90 or a 240GB for £169 would serve better for fast loading times.

To me this is a drive without a market? Maybe I'm missing the point can someone enlighten me?

Good part: 1. the drive itself.

2. 5 year warranty.

Bad part?

Heat generation. We need to water cool it.
