weird issues installing windows

hello oc3d,

i'm trying to reinstall windows on my "old" PC as i'm going to sell that soon but got some very werid issues.

should be as easy as plugging the usb flash drive with win7 on it in, boot from it and install right?
well, i can't even get on the flash drive.

i'm always either getting "win boot conf data file does not contain a valid OS entry" (oxc0000098) or "the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible" (0xc000000e)

tried multiple flash drives with win7 on it, reburned win7 on them, cleared cmos and reset the bios via bios

still getting it over and over again

any solutions?

Well... It's not as simple as just 'Plug-n-play' unfortunately, to make the USB drive usable at start-up you have to first turn it into a bootable drive...
Some BIOS roms work differently than others - Try http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Or for a more simple procedure, since you're using a Win7 installation, use the official Microsoft Win7 .ISO bootable drive utility http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

Without doing the above, the BIOS won't know what file to point to when you're booting up - You could have a multitude of files on the USB stick for example...

Good luck!

I know this sounds Clichéd, but have you tried a different stick? Sometimes they don't all work as bootable drives, as ironic as that sounds...

as it's an old PC, double check your motherboard supports boot from USB.

In which case he'll want to get a DVD and burn the .ISO to that instead. There are ways around this problem but it takes time and effort, money is a far faster alternative. lol

Try the official Microsoft tool if you haven't, worth a shot.

gonna give a differen program a shot first, then the microsoft one
hope that works
i'd like to sell that pc tomorrow..

k i think some air needs to be cleared here. he did use that iso successfully before, he did use that stick successfully before and he used it on that exact pc successfully before.
If he was in search of a workaround this would have been resolved a while ago, but evading problems won't make them disappear.

creating a bootable drive with a differen program worked for some reason

used ISOtoUSB first, didn't work
now after using UltraISO everything is fine

ran into another issue though, "Setup was unable to create a new system partition"
solved it by unplugging one of the two HDDs
no idea why this worked but i won't complain

glad its all sorted :P i get that error when installing on my ssd with second drive in.

okay so i got another issue now
installed windows, everything normal, booted to the desktop
removed the flash drive i used to install win7, tried to reboot and got "bootmgr is missing"

so i tried to boot from the flash drive again to use the repair options but ran into another error message saying something like "can't write to the drive. remove the write restriction of drive F:" (not sure what the exact english translation is)

thing is, drive F is the flash drive. why would it want to write to that?

any ideas how to get that pc booting?

edit:

now i disconnected the 2nd harddrive and the ODD (don't worry i don't use them) and it is booting fine

still would like it to boot with everything plugged in..

edit 2:

changing the boot order in the bios fixed it
