Anyone got one of these? got my 74gb through the post today, its funny how loud it is, sounds like my old pentium from 1996. im looking to buy a Silentmaxx Aluminium HD-Silencer from specialtech but would like somone to shed some light on these and if they really stop most of the noise from the drives..Also do these encosures only fit in 5.25 cdrom bays?

Yup, I have these drives set up in RAID 0 (the X version)...they are pretty loud aye...most of the high-end builders seem to use the zalman heatpipe HDD coolers....haven't tried one myself tho.

i usually have music running on the pc 90% of the time so shouldnt be a problem anyway, cant decide weather its worth getting a silencer or not. I got a thermaltake kandalf LCS case which apparently is silent but is very loud imo. a silent pc would be a dream come true someday.

I suggest good hd coolers for these babies and also the use of rubber gromets on the mounting screws between the hd and the cage, this will significantly quiet them down.

I put in a Zalman heatpipe HDD cooler on a noisyish heat prone Maxtor - fixed the noise, but not the overheating - probably 'cos of very badly designed case, cannot get any air to to drive area at all (it's ok I know how to fix it, just can't get around to it).

Next PC that I build I'm going to box the PC in a cool 'n quiet place and run an external optical and USB hub to the desk. That should sort out all noise problems at once.

Can anyone think of any issues running the optical and USB away from the main box?
