Watercooled Temp Question

Hey everyone, my first post here so i hope its in the correct section. Hopefully enough of my system spec's are in my signature?

My CPU temps seem a little high for me with the sort of watercooling i have running. I am using the xeon as the system is used for gaming and a 24/7 media server so low power usage was a massive factor when i picked the CPU. Plus its reportedly low temps.

But i haven't really noticed this. The system was a replacement for my power hungry 1090T@4GHz which i had watercooled, and would often hit lowest temps of 19'C or lower. Highest temps were around 55'C.

Since upgrading to the xeon, the system sits at lowest temps of 23'C, while running Prime95 on small TFFT's it hits a highest of 60'C but when gaming can get up to 67'C. I know ivy bridge CPU's get hot but this seems a little excessive.

I have re-seated the CPU many times using my MX-4 but it doesn't make much of a difference. So my questions are as follows;

  1. Should i be worried about these temps on such an overkill water loop?
  2. Does anyone else have this CPU and block combination and what are your temps like?
  3. I read that on ivy bridge the waterblock works better when rotated 90' like i have it, Is this correct even for ivy bridge xeons?

I know this was a long first post and i have been putting off asking these questions for a long time as they seem relatively stupid but after a lot of searching i just had to ask.

imo it seems a little warm considering the size of the radiator and only cooling the cpu. its not going to kill the thing so i wouldnt worry about that too much. what kind of fans are you using.
 
I'm using 4 Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm 1850 RPM on the rad connected to a fan controller so they run at i think its 25% so their silent. The rad is reviewed and benchmarked to work very well with low RPM fans, but i have tried increasing this from lowest to highest with no change
 
try increasing the speed a little bit in run my nff12s with the 7v reduced and they dont make a noise and my temps are quite good and i have everything wcd that can be. thats what i think it is.
 
Okk i have just increased the fan speed and it should be on about 50% now so will run a large FFT run for 30 minutes or so, as that gives off the most heat and see what it sits at

I have messed about with it a little yeh. I will test that aswell.
I have just run a large FFT with the fans on lowest. And I am running one now with the 4 fans running maxed out to see what sort of result that will give. I will post both of those images once the full speed test is done. Then will start messing about with the pump.

I may change the orientation of the block at some point so it is the recommended way round. As im insure exactly how the block flows the water, the die in the cpu may be running along a different way, I.e. across instead of vertically. May make a difference

Ok so i have now done 4 tests, Here are all the results from them so you can see

Fans on Lowest
Fans Slightly Faster
Fans Full
Pump speed up - 1650rpm to 2136rpm

Very strange that their all about the same amounts. And having the pump faster actually makes things worse, must be head from the pump getting into the loop or it being too fast to convey the heat

I'm considering the fact that the Ivy Bridge heat spreader was put on using the worst TIM known to man. I know its an issue, and these CPU's are designed to run cool, so maybe the heat spreader isn't making contact enough with the die or the TIM is very very bad and just isn't conducting the heat. The block is clamped down as much as i dare clamp it, and i over tighten stuff easily so i know its down.

It is just as if the heat isn't leaving the CPU. Ambient temp by the way is 21'C. I don't really want to remove the heat spreader from the main CPU, i know i would break it as i don't have the patience to do it properly :(
 
Seems that way. I have always used AMD before this cpu so its a little disappointing to have an overly warm cpu as my first one. I was tempted to switch over to haswell and get the intel 4770 as I don't overclock due to needing low power usage but good performance.

And if anyone is wondering, the large radiator is because I intend to watercool my cpu, mb, and a gtx 780 at some point. Another reason I asked as if I have a warm cpu, having a gpu and mb may make it even warmer.
 
it would indeed. how much im not sure but considering the level your stock cpu is id say it would get to the point where you wouldnt like it
 
I think it's unlikely to be a TIM issue since it's running at stock.

I'm guessing it's running on auto voltage?

Can you manually adjust volts on Xeons? I know you can't really overclock them, but undervolting them may solve your issues if you can do it.

To be fair - your temperatures aren't really that bad. Sure they're a bit high for watercooling but they are well within limits
 
Yeh its on auto volts but I don't have any experience in adjusting them and as it is a 24/7 server i'm afraid to mess with it. It does clock up properly. With the stock being 3.3GHz and it turbos up to 3.7GHz comfortably which is the highest clock it can get to on water and is reported to only hit 3.5GHz with air. So that may be why its warm as it is peaking the turbo speeds.

The stress test voltage does jump to 1.2V when i initially start the test but stabilizes down to the 1.176V
 
I'm unsure. I have windows power profile set to balanced, and when its idle the CPU clocks down to 1.6GHz to save power. and that still only gives me the lowest core temp of 23'C
