Water Cooling Component Advice

Hello All,

I have read that its not the best thing to get a water cooling kit, so I am considering ordering everything individually. My aim is to cool a oced q6600 at around 3.6ghz, and the x48 chipset on a dfi x48 lt (which i will get after the water cooling), as quietly as possible. I will test the cooling on my current dfi sli-dr, and use my current 120mm Thermaltake fan and AS5.

I am restricted to a small 120mm rad as I want to internally mount it. Ham has helped and I have come up with the following:

  • XSPC Delta V2 CPU Block (£28.99)
  • XSPC Delta Chipset Block (£18.99)
  • 12v DCC Laing DDC Pro 10w (£48.10) or Ultra 18w (£57.99) with XSPC Top (still undecided which one)
  • XSPC RS120 Rad (£17.99) (99% sure it will fit)
  • XSPC 1 Bay Res (£19.99)
  • Feser Coolant(£8ish)
  • 3/8 Tubing (£4ish)
  • All 10/8mm compression fittings (they look the easiest)
  • Springz Anti Kink stuff (£2ish)
  • A 120mm fan to convert to a cheap shroud (Cheap as poss)
  • ATX power effort

I was looking at the XSPC Top with Res, but am I right in thinking that the bay res would be better?

Also do I need the 18w pump as I doubt I will be adding my GPU onto the loop as I have a Glacier fan that does a great job.

Any help will be great, thanks.

1. Dont try cool cpu and chipset with a single rad, especially not just an XSPC one

2. Get good enough tube that you dont need the anti kick coils

3. Yes the bay res would be better, the built in res reduces head

4. Maybe better CPU block for that price

5. Either pump would be ok for you but obviously 18w would be preferable

Other than that it looks fine :) grab me on msn if you want to discuss anything more

You'll need a 120.2 for the CPU + chipset loop at the least.

The CPU block is fine - it's only a couple of degrees off the FuZion and it's easy to fit :)

10/8mm compression fittings are what I used in my first watercooling setup, they are easy to use and work well, but can be expensive (£1.50 each?) WCUK sell some pretty flexible PVC tubing too :)

1. I really don't want to external mount it, would the Black Ice GT Stealth I (£25.99) be better? (I don't think the ThermoChill PA 120.1 will fit)

2. Will do

3. Will get the bay (its only a few pounds more)

4. Swiftech Apogee GT? (£29.99 + P&P)? (cant get it from Aqua PC or Water Cooling UK :( )

5. Will go for the 18w one.

Ill get on MSN when I get home.

Nah stick with the regular one, the stealth is made for compactness. You could perhaps go for two 120mm radiators ? If not then I would do away with the idea of cooling the chipset with water.

Can recommend XSPC high quality 3/8ths tubing, nice stuff but might be too thick to use with compression fittings, as will masterkleer 7/16ths, which is also fantastic. Is ease of installation the main reason for choosing compression fittings? because its really not much effort with barbs and wormdrives, will work out about the same cost and allows for using thick walled tubing

Yea the apogee GT would be a good bet for that price, get it wherever is cheapest if none of our partner sites have it

Id have to say a 120mm radiator wouldnt cope with an overclocked quad on its own tbh.

Once you start watercooling the bug hits so get what you can afford now.

Ther are alot of cases around with 360mm rads off the back off the case so space can be worked around quite easily.

If funds is the issue get a thermochill pa120.2 and some decent fans.

If you want to cool the gpu at a later date then you need to be thinking 360mm rad or a whole new loop.

Hmm after speaking to llwyd I might look into getting a new case that can house a 240 rad internally. I wont be wc my gpu as the fan on it is great and i cant ever hear it over my normal case fans.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good case that has 240 rad mounts for around £100? (the CM Cosmos looks lush but @ £150, ouch)

Cosmos is the only one i can think of that can house internally..

And why not get the EK supreme CPU block?

And tbh the 10w DDC would be enough i would have thought.

I spoke to Jim and there was one other case... The Black Pearl. So I went out and plundered the ye ole bank account and bought it new from a Amazon market place seller for £55 odd. We will see if it turns up :S

If it does I can internally house a 240 rad and was thinking of the XSPC R120-D. Ill stick with the 18w pump and move to 1/2 tubing. Reading the XSPC Delta v2 review here, im thinking of getting it and sticking with all XSPC parts :P (apart from the pump).

Edit: Bah just read that the XSPC R120-D wont fit, neither will the ThermoChill PA 120.2 or the Swiftech MCR220.

Edit 2: Right will have to go with the Black Ice Stealth GT II as I need to save space so not to cover up half the mobo, and it is good with low CMF fans.

P.S. thanks everyone for the advice! :)
