VRAM Useage tests

Grab the beta version, that should have Vram usage in
smile.png

Fraps only shows fps, so useless for vram monitoring, ive switched over to after burner for my fps monitoring aswell now as i can have temps, vram usage and fps all showing nice and pretty

He doesn't want to monitor, he wants to capure screenshots, please read before you post!

I derped a little while i was typing the post out lol, probably cause it was 4am and i hadnt had a coffee since midnight

sorry.

I was meant to say something closer to:

Fraps only shows its own fps counter in its screen shots, it wont have any of the afterburner info in the screen shot (making the screen grab relevant for this thread) so if you want to have all the usage info in it you will nee to use the afterburner screen shot hotkey. Ive switched over to AB for everything now because i can have ALL the info i could want on the screen shot all showing nice a pretty.

In true nerdy geek fashion, I'm about to Excel and go over the top with this stuff, and also try to simplify how entries can be made to collate stuff together easier.

Ugh !

What I want to do to make this a bit simpler is to generalise a few things:

The settings, in 5 stages and it involves the user's opinion of how high they've set them based on:
  1. MAXIMUM - Absolutely every slider to the max, AA, AF, MSAQPAD/whatever, PhysX/Havok/whatever - EVERYTHING!
  2. VERY HIGH/ULTRA - The biggest of preset, but you've undercut something from the above. By choice or forced.
  3. HIGH - The 2nd highest preset
  4. MEDIUM - Mid settings
  5. LOW - Between the lowest possible and medium.

Accepting that this isn't an even spread. The 2 top ones can be considered close in various games. But this should be ok cos most members play their games at the top level or just under.

DirectX, Hires Textures, MODS.

All these will be considered applied. I know it's a generalisation in some cases, but if there's patches available, we assume they're applied.

What I'll probably ask is that this thread be closed and another one started in the new context and a massaged intro to the listing.

Lemme know what you think.

Wrong Fraps captures anything on the screen in its screenshot, so Afterburner info is captured also.

this is how I do it and you can clearly see all my AB info in my fraps screenshots, I was suggesting Fraps to the gentleman, because It is way harder to explain how to capture a screenshot in afreburner, honestly I don't know how to do it because I use fraps, because thats what it's designed for and so damd easy.

I think to make these results more relevant you should have the users opinion about if the game was playable on their card or not and perhaps have them compare a few resolutions.

For example when I do more testing (which I will soon once new NVIDIA drivers are released that don't bsod the second I activate surround mode) I intend to give tests at 1024 x 3 1280 x 3 1680 x 3 1920 x 3 and 2560 x 3 and then we can see where the memory is maxing out and how playable it is at each one.

For example lets say I do 1680 x 3 and it uses 1.5GB of VRAM but it is playable? And yet 2560 x 3 or 1920 x 3 is unplayable? This would indicate to me that more memory would be needed?

I had thought about that. And I also thought about cpu and main memory use.... it would be a grand exercise to get the whole thing, but then when do you stop ? You'd also then need cpu & memory figures. However much I would find that very interesting, mainly cos I can't believe how much cpu use people quote their rigs using whilst playing games as the ones I build use seem to use a fraction.

But to quantify the test, it's mainly concerned with the amount of vram used. Whether a game is playable is... well it is very important at the end of the day - being realistic, you could have a theoretical 6g 7600GT - the memory use recording is what we're after, the fact it runs like an absolute dog is down to the 7600GT part of the equation. But shouldn't we know that anyway ? We can look at lots of reviews that already state the grunt the cards have.

I don't know, it's like to me the recording(s) done with 2x460 just to get the memory use is important at this point. We would know that compared to 2x7970, the gameplay in terms of fps is going to be crap.

I will sugest to you sir to read before you post , you got it totally mixed up!!

Um no i didn't

Do me/us another favour too, if you wouldn't mind - keep an eye on how much of your cpu is being used. I'll explain why, and I wish I'd thought of this at the beginning.

I don't know, but AB may well have cpu usage % in the list of things you can display

Nah I looked myself last night. Only gpu stuff - too bad.

A sneaky peak of what I been messing with with the crap that is Microsoft Excel: (if life isn't hard enough, make it so)

Difficulty is just a word I chose for the formula. It just relates to how hard the card appears to work with it's resources.

please give me a post number that i made with Rastalovich's name in it!

@BKCXB

Jonny is right, you and I hunta got confused about what Rasta and I were talking about! Read from post #93 on page 5.

We were talking about cpu usage and in #100 Hunta mis read my post reading gpu instead of gpu.

Then you and he started talking about monitoring gpu usage in fraps/AB.

Jonny tried to get the convo back to cpu usage but you didn't realise that was what we were talking about!

M&P

I was talking to Lysol , nobody else, I can't control what every one post after me or while I am helping someone fix something totally unrelated to what everyone else is talking about, I'm not confused Your taking what I said out of context.
