VRAM Useage tests

Sorry guys , next time I play I'll get some more, couldn't remember where the font size adjustment in afterburner was. I got it all sorted now.

first one is 993Mb

second one is 1000Mb

third one is 1001Mb

how the hell do i get the afterburner osd to show up? i have set key bindings, pageup page down and end for the hotkeys. but in mw3 (the only game i have tried it on) no osd appears... oh well, prob doin something stupid!

i am close to getting an upgrade from my 1gb 5770. and whilst i can see that 1gb is good enough for the most part for future games it is not worth getting a 1gb card now, that is the only reason i don't want to buy a 560ti, now i know that there is a 2gb version available, but this is more expensive than the hd7850.

Make sure you assign what you want to show up in the OSD , most people check the box for GPU usage, GPU temp, Memory usage, and assign a Key to toggle OSD.

Start up afterburner on your desktop before the game, when the game starts, hit the key you assigned to toggle OSD, should pop up!

I found it very confusing at first but played with a bit and figured it all out.

Just did Mass Effect 3

Don't have any screenies but using EVGA precision in BF3 I've recorded using 1350-1400 mb throughout games. My settings are the ultra preset but AA knocked down to 2x. 1920x1080 monitor

specs

i5 2500k (stock) limited by my intel stock cooler currently
sad.png

ASRock Extreme4 Gen3 p67

8GB corsair vengeance ram

EVGA gtx 570 HD 1.2gb vram

I should also add that though going over the amount of vram I have available I get no stuttering or any sort of anomaly during gameplay all is smooth and perfectly fine. I tested it on low settings with the same 2x AA and gameplay felt the same despite a 15fps jump not sure about vram on low preset, didn't check.

This is interesting too. A mate of mine uses a 1.5G 580 (i7 x58 w/6G), maxes all settings and has no significant slow down. I've ask him for screenies too

Personally I'd appreciate some of the 5770 results now and of your upgrade afterwards

Well went through some games this morning and I have uploaded screenshot's taken using Frap's whilst running MSI Afterburner.

All games were ran at the maximum detail setting's that they offer within the game except for Crysis 2 which I downloaded the High Res Texture Pack and DX11 Upgrade for, so I maxed that out as well.

Only ran through abit of a few single player mission's but it should give a good idea as to what each game will use.

Resolution is 1920x1080 on a single GTX 680 not overclocked.

I have put the images in Album's on ImageShack so that I don't take up allot of room with this post.

CRYSIS 2 (HIGH RES DX11)

http://imageshack.us/g/19/crysis22012040613132474.jpg/

Now for the numbers

Cod 4: 692Mb

Cod 5: 586Mb

BO: 1019Mb

MW3: 1094Mb

BFBC2: 894Mb

BF3: 1509Mb

C W: 1611Mb

C2: 1973Mb

I am sure if I went further in to the games the numbers would probably increase and probably on the multiplayer side of the games as well but the shocking one for me is Crysis 2.

Outstanding.

Think we've noticed that from time to time there's an anomaly with the results that just jumps out there. We can alienate them as "perhaps there was a bug in the particular game where memory was allocated but not unallocated" for some reason, but the game recovered.... Being consistent at a certain level, then getting a spike without a damn good reason, has to be taken into account. But a result is a result and should be recorded.

I know Crysis 2 started off at around 1700 and pretty much stayed up and around the 1750 to 1900 mark through out the whole time I was playing.

I would have tried Crysis 1 but my disc is ruined so need to find a download off it or see if my disc will copy so that I can install it, that is if EA won't add it to my Origin account.

I will do some more over the next few month's during which time I will have upgraded to a Ivy Bridge cpu and a Z77 board, not to mention adding a 2nd GTX 680 and water cooling the card's.

So here we go, i've gone through pretty much game i've got installed on my machine

i skipped a few that seem to have broke since i switched graphics cards, and a few where i didn't think i'd see too much difference (only one of the COD series and the assassins creed series for example)

A reminder of the rig

i7 960 @ 4.2GHz

6GB 1600MHz RAM

HD7970 @ 1125/1575

So I'll go in alphabetical order (BTW, some of them have smaller and a bit harder to read OSD text, thats because i remembered part way thru you could change the size but couldn't be bothered to go back and change it on the previous shots)

First up is Assassins creed revelations, probably the most surprisingly low one of the bunch, I know its basically a console port but you would have thought this big open world would have used more than 700mb

ACRSP2012-04-0616-34-27-18.jpg

Next up is aliens vs predator, I was surprised with this one because it ate the VRAM up but the GPU usage was pretty low

Civilisation V, now I dont actually play this game, like ever, because its crap, but this one surprised the hell out of me, over 2GB of VRAM for something that you wouldn't think is taxing at all

CivilizationV_DX112012-04-0617-18-07-11.jpg

Now for Combat Mission: Shock Force, a title I don't think any of you will have heard of, but if anyone out there plays it give me a shout
smile.png
This game is pretty badly coded and is heavily physics based and CPU bound, it is not multi threading enabled and even at 4.2GHz my CPU just doesn't have the grunt to do it lol, still its VRAM we're concerned about here

Crysis warhead up next:

And just for fun here's one running in 3D

Crysis2012-04-0523-33-06-60.jpg

Crysis 2 up now, again don't play this one because I don't like it very much, it's only running in DX11 and without the high res pack, because i CBA to download it

Far cry 2, pretty much what i'd expect

Call of duty, modern warfare 3 up next, another console port, and for some reason even though GPU usage is very low frame rates weren't locked at 60 FPS, strange

Napoleon total war now, one of my favourite games, and as I expected a VRAM hog. One of the few games i played here that actually drew me into actually playing the game instead of just getting screenies lol

Need for speed the run, this game seems to be a bit broken, regardless of Vsynch being on or off FPS seems locked to 30, GPU use is stupidly low, but hey as its a driving game its playable

Rage, this game just plain wouldn't work, froze every 2 seconds so i just grabbed what I could

Rage2012-04-0617-04-19-16.jpg

Red Orchestra 2, heroes of stalingrad. This is built on the Unreal Engine 3 which i believe is a bit aging now despite this being a new game, but it is quite a niche market one.

Finally shogun total war 2, as expected again quite a VRAM hog, although for some reason would not let me turn AA on

Is this the sort of thing you want?

Gotham City Impostors - 690MB-720MB average 744MB max memory usage on an MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr III OC/PE 1.28GB - 1080p everything maxed out.

With NFS The Run that is one thing that seriously annoyed me about it, the stupid FPS cap but it just show's how much of a console port it is.

you would have thought it would be single paramater they could have changed from 30 to 60 though, seems lazy to me

Just played BF3 and here are the results:

Playing at 1920 x 1200 (Max Settings). Graphics card is in Sig and is at stock (but factory overclocked)

Highest memory usage I saw was strangely on the Menu/Deploy screen:

Will do some more games later on.

I have been reading through a thread on Kepler over at Aria and there is a guy on there that has a 680 and is running a triple screen setup @ 5760x1080.

Even on high settings in BF3 he is only using 1.6gb of Vram, he can't run ultra because the card just isn't powerful enough. He also mentions in another post that 99.9% of other games barley use 1.5gb.

Here is the thread, the guys name is Seb.F read from pages 147 - 149

http://forums.aria.c...er-Chat/page147

Pretty interesting and shows that Vram isn't a big of a deal as people make out, seems so far that only BF3 is a Vram demanding game.

another interesting thing to note is that my friend who is running 2xGTX295s, which has 1GB of RAM per GPU can run BF3 at max settings when I somehow need 1.6GB to run it that high
