Vista Wreaks Havoc On Games, Says Report

An industry games developer claims that at least nine out of ten games do not work with Vista. Do you think that the security measures MS have put in place are detrimental to the gaming performance of the Vista OS? Feel free to comment below...

He's just a freakin n00b, if current games work (They do work...), whats the so difficult in making a new game would to?

If there was any real evidence to back his claims then his views might be worth something, but as they are it seems like he's just acting like a little kid.

Vista is more secure out of the box only because users are dumb. If the security features were off (or easy to turn off), then the average n00b would be unprotected, and then bash MS for making an insecure OS when things went wrong.

He said that 20 of his 90 employees spent about one year to make Wild Tangent's games compatible with Vista

I can understand why he's frustrated if this is true.

But he does seem to blame the security of vista a lot. Something windows has been lacking for ages. It seems like he's just letting off steam from frustration of having to re-code a lot of the network stuff.

Altho I've see loads of articles where game developers are putting vista down and complaining about it. Not very good considering one of the main selling points is directx10

DX10 is set to be great.

The thing is that PC's need to be secure and Vista is getting there. I'm glad that people have to re-code as it means hopefully it'll lead to less vulnerabilities

I think time will tell, but I really don't like directx. It's just another microsoft lock-in. But to make it worse, directx10 means you need to spend £250+ for a new graphics card :(.

I think developers should be looking more for cross-platform options rather than being locked in with microsoft :(.

Maybe someone will make a dx10 wrapper for XP+dx9 :) but maybe that's being as hopefull as saying vista is secure

Like the bois said when they called on him that time, "pay u`r dues - or u`ll see unfortunate things happening".

I wouldn`t have been supprized to see a hell of alot of games and packages not work, unless u payed u`r dues, but this seems to be a shout in the dark.

I haven`t heard any1 on here complaining about masses of their software not working, apart from drivers that are emerging out of beta into full grown items in themselves now.

He reckon he`ll have to have 1 game for XP and 1 game for Visa - OR WRITE THE GAMES PROPERLY! ?

The truth is that MS make the best and most available dev tools out there. DirectX has really taken PC gaming to a new level.

Perhaps maybe one day someone will make something open source that approaches being as good/accessible - we can only hope

But then maybe one day MS won't get slated for five minutes

That day, I fear, will never come

@Rast - almost every game I've tried runs fine, most just by selecting to run in XP compatibility mode

OpenGL is ok? :) but I think a lot of microsoft's stuff is easier to use, but then that can lead to it being hacked/decompiled easier :(

Haha :) soz :p

I just can't see where this could be true. When I was using RTM I installed a good amount of games and none of them that I installed wouldn't work. Some of them had a few hiccups that needed to be ironed out with Vista but nothing that couldn't be fixed.

For example in BF2142 your rank, for some odd reason, doesn't show up in the BFHQ and you can't unlock new weapons. But the game itself ran just fine.

I'm gonna raise the :bs: on this article.

It`s what I figured, for this executive to come out with this seems strange.

U have to expect some occurances, but I would have thought 1/10 not 9/10 .. prehaps he`s read his prepared statements wrong >.<

Game devs wishing to survive will use other game backbones at their own risk.

Mann BS. The only game that didn't work 100% properly on Vista is NFS Carbon cuz EA is retarded and BF2 online didn't connect to server because it didn't have proper privileges. The fix for the BF2 problem was simple, just right click > run as admin and you're good to go.

Even if this was the case, it's not exactly going to be hard to make an emulator to run XP dependent games in.

oooooo ouch Llwyd, how u think the market will feel to be told to emulate the last OS they had after spending 100s on the new OS >.<

About as bad as EA feel having a game that doesn't work on the new OS. There is a problem and an XP environment emulator would solve it. Like Wine (i think) for Linux and Mac

Let's be fair: BF2/2142 has it's problems running on XP never mind Vista

I've lost count of the amount of games that I've had to faff around finding patches and hacks to get them working on XP

Some game developers are just bloody lazy

I think in this instance Kemp, those game developers would need to patch their stuff if it was running on any machine.

Agreed, but I`d probably add that apart from lazyness, it`s getting the game package on the shelf on set dates to get the income in.

Lets face it, we went thru exactly the same thing when we all migrated from Windows 98/ME to 2000. Win2k was a totally different kettle of fish (being based on NT unlike any other previous MS home OS), but still less than 6 months after release full support for almost every bit of hardware and software was there.
