Vista Tops in Security

A Microsoft Corp. executive Wednesday said Windows Vista’s first 90 days was a huge security success when compared to the opening three months of Windows XP, the current Apple Inc. Mac OS X, and three flavors of Linux.

A friendly reminder to all who post: Please refrain from allowing this to descend into an OS bashing frenzy and keep posts on-topic please.

Vista is just short of amazing in the security department, truly. I finally feel that MS has made a step in the right direction for helping it's customers avoid the day-to-day hassles of spyware, viruses, trojans, and the whole nine yards.

Now, if only MS would start shipping a decent AV product with Windows that's fully integrated in to kernel.

Vista seems to have better security than XP, but it also isn't selling as well which means it is less of a target. Comparing the number of bugs in Windows to Redhat, Ubuntu or Suse is rediculous because these all include huge amounts of software available for them, it would be equivalent to including a whole bunch of software in the number of Vista bugs.

well lets just hope vista will be as secure as various unix flavours in years to come as im pretty sure it will be the most mainstream os.

Yes, only time will tell, I could see a hypothetical situation where one problem causes something to go from most to least secure.

idd :)

I was thinking this earlier, but didn't know how to word it without someone getting the wrong idea and thinking I was just bashing ms/vista without reason.

They already announced Service Pack 1 for this year so thats why I'm waiting too. Also I need a sound card that is Vista compliant

Not bothered about SP1 but believe you should get value and security for money, so would love it if they dropped the price to match that of our friends in the US, I would buy it tomorrow then.

I'll give you a little insight into why vista is more expensive in the UK than it is in the USA.

UK minimum wage: $10

USA minimum wage: $5

Now these are probs a couple $ out, but you get the point.

From what I've read from various sources on the net, vista has seen a greater than anticipated take up, when compared to XP and the like

well done MS it looks like the paranoia approach is working for them..

but please remember the linux patches were preemptive possible attackpoints when vista needs patched it beacuse it will (most likely) have been compromised

and may i remind you all the most secure OS is OpenBsd with only 2 security patches EVER and one was preemptive (see here)
