Vista Readyboost - using it?

Well I didn't have a fast enough flash drive for it but I bought a bargain 4gb Buffalo High-speed pen drive from Amazon (£20) and I really have noticed the difference in Vista

Vista is pretty speedy for me anyway but the extra boost with programs loading faster etc (esp firefox) really is noticeable

I know XMS tried it and didn't notice much

Anyone else tried it?

Is this that Vista feature that uses a flashdrive as ram?

Tom's Hardware did thorough tests on it. Basically their conclusion was, if you have at least 1GB of RAM and an SATA HD, you don't gain much advantage using ReadyBoost.

I haven't any testing of my own since I got the flash drive and started using it as soon as I got Vista. Maybe one of these days I'll take it out and see if it feels any slower.

I really notice it when using Fireworks, Photoshop and Firefox, but mostly when loading...it speeds up loading by a few seconds

I've moved back to Windows 2003 now...that gave me a much bigger speed boost

I get my Vista fix using a Vista Theme and replica sidebar now.

Think I'll give it a second chance when it hits SP1

It's weird cause me and you find almost (apart from cr@ppy 3rd party driver support) totally opposite opinions. I find Vista quicker quite a few things

Maybe difference in hard drive set-ups? I honsetly found vista the same as XP speed wise.

Aye but I have noticed a difference in response time with Vista Readyboost. Loading Firefox with my new drive takes about 1-2 seconds whereas without (and in XP) it takes 3-5seconds

technically yes.

but id recommend getting a high speed drive (such as the OCZ ones)

Well it tests the drive for speed before it lets you use it. My old no-name one didn't work but this high-speed one works a treat. As most things I guess the faster one you get the better readyboost will work

Yeah i think you are best going for the ones designed for readyboost if that's what you really want to use it for. On first test it said my OCZ drive wasn't fast enough, but then I cleared some stuff off and tested again and it passed.

Probably the reason why I didn't see any difference was down to my windows drives being SATAII and RAID0.

The Hitachi Deskstars are totally different drives to the IBM Deskstars badged with the above name. Hitachi Deskstars are excellent performing drives up there with the best in the market.

Ya, I don`t think I got any IBM ones that work anymore >.< U get to forget the drive manufs when u got a good handful of them about.

The 2 Hitachi I got in Raid0 seem to be ok nothing more special than the wd tho. Got quite a number of wd and samsung on the go.

Tbh, Deskstar/Deathstar is an unfortunate badge in itself. Should call them all Eastern Specials tbf.

I`m keen to know tho, do we think that SA2 access outside of Raid x has a significant speed increase with Vista ? (or maybe that the raid is just not so noticable)
