Virgin Media

vm 50mb is unlimited, and achieved 50mb most of the time when i had it.i've been with most suppliers now,but went back to sky due to lack of hd channels on vm,however i do miss the 50mb internet, made things so much easier.

To clarify I'm ditching Cable for good old fashioned copper wire from BT. I know that this is counter intuitive but guys if you have been through the last three months I have you would understand. VM in their attempt to bump up the headline max download have changed how their network works. These changes have caused side affects, the whole thing is way too sensitive. The old system was more robust, contention wasn't a major issue, it was less susceptible to line noise. So the network was running fine with all it's little errors and problems, not a major issue to the customers. In fact completely transparent to the customers. Well they changed the way the network works to enable 100Meg and bam! the whole network is way more sensitive and all of those little errors are jumping up and biting them in the butt. In the evening the network becomes chocked. Take last night, I was kicked form my server playing Black Ops at around 18:30. TeamSpeak lost connection within a few minuets. by 19:30 web surfing was like dial up and by 20:00 the connection was down completely. It came back up by 22:00ish. It's been like this since they installed the "SuperHub", the device that switches you over to the new network system. I have been unable to use the internet in the evening since the beginning of the year.

I feel so sad right now. You guys are talking about 50mb, 100mb etc. internet speeds while I got onl 2mb.... xD It's so fucking slow it's crazy.... I HATE IT!!!! When I move to my own place I will have the fastest internet Telenor delivers and funny enough, that's only 25mb if I'm not mistaking...

I'll be honest I think that very high download speeds are over rated. It's been hyped for so long now people believe it's what they want without questioning it. No one is talking about quality, it's all about the headline grabbing top speed.

I know if your stuck on a 2Meg line then you will have a hard time accepting what I'm saying but experience is tells me otherwise.

Real low ping, zero packet loss, equal upload to download. For most home users 1 or 2 meg up and down is more than than sufficient. For power users and I would guess most reading this forum would fit that category, 10 meg up and down would be ample. Think about it even for you guys with real fast connections, how often do you really use it. The most traffic I send or receive is for bittorrent, and a 10 meg connection would be more than enough it it was up AND down. However super low ping and reliable connection would be a must for gaming.

Returning to my suggestion of thinking about net connection like water supply. Everyone is concentrating on the size of the pipe and no one cares that the water tastes bad! I want pure water that tasts nice without impurity not the ability to fill a bath the 20 seconds with brown stinky water.

So if someone would offer that guaranteed of low latency and 100% up time with equal upload to download I for one would pay good money for it. Call it Geeknet or something... Internet for the refined consumer.

as i have already said - it is not how fast you can get data, but how fast the other party(s) can send it to you.

I do have very good ping and never lag spikes caused by my internet, but I do download quite often and when I download games (Read below for reason) it takes like a couple of nights with downloading which is a pain in the arse. So annoying. The same with movies.

(I download games before buying them because there's no way in hell I'm going to spend 60 bucks on a game I might not even like. But if I like it I ALWAYS buy it.)

Stick away from the reason the guy above used, its a surefire way of getting the thread locked/deleted.

I would be happy with 24mbps of good quality internet. I don't think many places upload faster than that anyway. I too value pings, uptime and contention above bandwidth speed.

virgin media has never let me down even when i was on 20mb/10mb.

50mb is really cheap these days and it has never dropped from around 48mb-49mb

i also get 5mb upload in my area which is great for streaming and i can stream HD gaming.

And i am trialling 100mb when it reaches my area early this summer.

just did a quick test for ya

Same case as Ghosthud with me, never had a problem with vm, the ul speed boost gets to my area next month so cant wait for that, and 100 meg rolls out the month after.

i get upgraded in may to 100mb

vm do have hiccups every now and again, but a phone call soon sorts it out for me

Lucky! The US is so far behind you guys when it comes to Internet speeds. I just got upgraded to 12Mb from 8Mb.

I'd recommend steering clear of VM, i've been with them for 3 years and it has gotten worse over the years, I have to ensure I don't go over their download limits on their 'unlimited' or what ever they call it service. The download speeds are good i'm not going to lie, however the upload speeds are shocking, even with the apparent upgrade they did (which I have not noticed at all). Their phone line charges are ridiculous along with their non-existent customer services (just check their forums).

To be honest most big companies are like this, you've just got to find the lesser of evil. On a side note, I love their ridiculous analogy about traffic jams and buying a fast car but having to go at the speed limit, they put you on lines which can't handle the capacity and blame it on everyone using too much bandwidth, I might as well buy a standard car which costs less and goes the same speed then.

Their 'traffic management' policy, apparently the whole day is peak time for VM.

If you're going to go with the 50MB connection, yeah might be good, however depends on your area and if a lot of other people are using VM where you live, use this website to check what your neighbours are using and what connections they are getting.

I'd recommend BE Broadband, other than that I seriously can't think of anyone, check out BT's new infinity service don't have any experience with it though.

well your experiences are weird tbh :/

a friend of mine who lives further south in boro. wanted vm......but the guy wouldn't actually install the connection knowing you wont get a good average, they refused his money to get him a better service.

the same happened to me but he tested it on wireless (fail engineer) and told me I couldn't have the line installed, so I made him plug in the Ethernet and yes i had full 50mb constant.

if you read the full service sheet of what your getting then you wouldn't have had this issue in the first place.

Do your research is all i can say

10mb/20mb are slowly been fazed out for obvious reasons, you will get capped at peak times and they dont hide the fact that you do.
