Venice with poor memory controller?

I`ve been asked to try a mates new Venice 3500+ Hes not really into overclocking but wants to know if Venice is as good as ppl are making out (and yea...I kinda persuaded him to let me have a go). Its an LBBLE 0519 but i`m having trouble with even moderate overclocks... 240x11 with 1.5V across the core, HT set to 3, then 4 wouldnt let me into windows. All my settings were the same as for my Winchester... my BIOS is ok for Venice, any ideas why this doesnt seem to be happening? At the mo, I`m thinking bad memory controller.

Cheers,

Kenny

So many variables on this one friend.

Venice are usually (as in I havent seen a bad one) in the memory controller DEPT.

Is everything okay in regard to cooling and seating of and contact?

Can you adjust the chipset and memory controller voltages on the EPOX?

I guess it could be not as good as one had hoped?

Try dropping the mutliplier and see if that helps?

hey Mav. Temps semm normal according to Speedfan, cooling is stock. Voltages are fine, double-checked them all. The CPU should be getting more than it needs for the speeds I was trying, will try the multi next.

Thanks for getting back to me so fast :)

Kenny

Right...tried dropping the multi to 10. 2680 with 1.55ish volts across the core. not stable with less juice. On stock cooling this as much voltage as i`ll give it so will see how far it`ll go with this voltage.

Still not ideal, but slightly better :)

UPDATE: roughly 2700MHz max. My Winchester did 2740 with the same voltage!

My mates using MSI and PC3200 so he wont care. For now..... :)

Lol....I got my new Enermax. I`m hoping that`ll solve my Winchester issues. If not..i`m gonna have a major sulk.

Do you know how high you can get the ram? Get him a larger cooler, then he might be able to go higher and would probably be quieter too.

I can get about 2700 from my 3500+ newcastle with my LS so getting that with air on a venice is extremely annoying for me lol.

Good luck with the PSU, i know what you mean about the sulk lol.

His RAM is unlikely to do 240 at timings worth knowing about. Y`know the cheap £30 512 sticks that can be bought at the local computer shops...thats what hes using :) He wanted to know for the future if/when he gets decent RAM. Will suggest an aftermarket cooler for him, or might offer him my stock cooler once I get my Vapo finally finished.

Sorry to rub it in bout the Venice against the Newcastle... just to make it worse... Fab at DPC has a 3000 Venice at 2.8. That makes our Vapo rigs look pretty poor value for money....

Thanks for helping me out once again G :)

aye my 3000 did 2.7gig on water and 3.1 -3.2 on phase :D tis a bugger getting it there with a msi neo 2 though

3.2 on phase is an achievement! Single stage or cascade? Thats impressive..esp with an MSI.... hats off to that!

Ona separate note...One thing with max OCs.....maybe we should differentiate between open bench setups with one-shot uber cooling and cased 24/7 rigs. If I should ever hit major clocks, I would wanna be able to use them for everything, not just my SuperPi

I can run 268*13 or 250*14 24/7 rock solid stable.

But I choose not to, mostly due to the extra volts everything requires and the fact that at those speeds - I really do not benefit on anything - except encoding.

I like to run max clocks at stock volts (~or maybe +0.1v LOL) 24/7 which in my case is 268*12

Cheers

I`ve found that overclocking my CPU helps my game frame rates more than OCing my GPU. So I can use the extra MHz. And yea....encoding :)
