Valve seem to be adding more and more features to steam lately, with the latest addition being Steam Music.

Steam Music will allow you to access all your music from within steam, and allow you to play your music both inside and outside of your games.

At present it is only available for Big Picture and SteamOS users, but will be available on your desktop eventually.

Below is what valve has to say about Steam Music;
Listen to your music collection while you play games

Steam Music will soon be in limited beta as a feature of SteamOS and Big Picture mode, with a desktop interface to follow.

Beta participants will be randomly selected from members of this group. Join now to express your interest in participating, and as always, please share your thoughts and feedback in the discussions once you've given Steam Music a try.

I personally see this a a great move from Valve, off course there is the added musical functionality for Steam Machines/SteamOS but it also will allow Steam on the desktop to open up to a possible wider spectrum of users (provided it is done well).

What do you guys think of this, would any of you guys be interested in using Steam as a Music playing platform?

I would also like to see video playback, App support with custom thumbnails would be a nice touch as well. Think Steam may need separate software store.

Video playback and steaming is the next logical step, it will make SteamOS much more appealing to many of us.

If they can also get apps for Netflix etc working in SteamOS, that would be great. Netflix is the only reason i still own a PS3.

I think it's a good move if your using a steam box or HTPC with SteamOS in the living room, how does it work though, can it just import your iTunes library?

Edit: The Netflix (unless it's been changed) on the PS3 is awful, it's not in HD at all and buffers a lot. Completely different service to using it on AppleTV or on a built-in app on Smart TV's.

I believe you just need to link your existing music directory to steam, we should learn more as people participate in the beta.

Adding all this additional functionality to Steam and SteamOS will definitely make it much more appealing.

When was the last time you used a PS3 for netflix, I find it pretty good, mine streams in HD fine. Xbox one was horrible too but has now been updated to match the PS3.

Definitely pretty cool, though I'd love for there to be a Spotify App on Steam OS. I really only use iTunes etc. to rip stuff from CDs and import them into my Spotify playlists.

I'd probably guess at about a year ago, maybe longer. It's probably sorted now since I know it's been patched since but still back then I was like what the heck is this, it was unwatchable.

I would use this.
Hopefully it has the media buttons like WMP had before 7 on the toolbar.
If it has video playback / streaming then that would be a massive plus.
I hope they also place the functionality to the overlay. This way when I'm playing music I can press F8 (overlay) and click a function.
