USB2 on PCI

Sorry for being stupid, but will I be able to get USB2 functionality on my Soltek SL-75DRV4 MoBo by putting the appropriate card into a spare PCI slot, or will I need to flash the BIOS to allow it (if available/possible). MoBo has USB 1.1 currently.

Do you have MS Windows XP Service Pack 1? USB2 is enabled in this update, USB2 is backwards compatable with USB1, meaning that if you have SP2-you definitely have USB2. Along with the increased data speed transfer....if you aren't sure, just head to windows update and check for the USB2 fix.

i am sorry PV but that statement is incorrect.

not all USB slots are USB2.0. I am guessing that this includes your mobo. Unfortunately no BIOS/Software upgrade will make your USb1.0 ports into USB2.0 hoever it is possible to get USB2 on your machine in the way you said.

Buying a USB2.0 PCI card will work fine and as PV said, it will all be backwards compatible with USB1 and this was the primary design objective when creating it.

Hope I Helped :anisx:

USB 2 vs 1.1

Thanks for your attention folks...but..so is the USB 2 facility OS-based or etc??? I'm aware of backwards compatabilitiy of USB2 devices to USB 1 (at 1.1 speed) and hardware reverse compatability, but forwards from the MoBo PCI...I don't quite get it

USB2 is hardware based in the fact that you need a USB2 based controller on your motherboard or a PCI card, but in order for USB2 to work, you need a specific set of drivers and an OS that supports it.

Basically you should be able to get a USB controller for a PCI slot on your motherboard. Just plug it in, load up the drivers and you're away!

As stated above, you need an OS that supports USB 2.0, but as long as yours is fully updated, it should be fine.

I've got a Belkin one that has never given me issues, although I've heard people slag them off. Cheap, cheerful and does the biz. :)

the prob with usb2 and older comps/mobos that if it only has 1 pci bus (like my older dell does) and if that bus is saturated and a USB 2 PCI card added then USB 2 functionality may be very hit and miss (on that dell the USB 2 card works bout 20 % of the time and reboots are neccessary to get it working - the same also goes for my sisters compaq (diff usb 2 card but only has 1 pci bus thtas saturated!) but hers works more often (bout 33% of time)

- oh yea no censorship so fuckity
