USB cable length (5m+)

I think I`ve noticed that if u have a 5m extension plugged into a USB port, some devices don`t `pickup` correctly when u plug them in.

Now for a setup, it`s beyond useful to have a 5m distance to the pc(s) - I`m thinking if a 2.5m (or so) USB->USB hub(powered)->2.5m USB, would be a better way to do it ?

If so, is it the power over the 5m that`s suspect, or the data integrity ?

Would the hub be a saviour to the data also ?

I would say data. But that is just my experience with eithernet.

But then again, some devices need more power then others and when plugged into a hub they decide not to work.

So with USB it could well be a power issue. ;)

Normally, on lower quality cables, the data integrity will drop if the cable are too long, but then, it could also be a power issue. This sounds to me as if it's a data integrity problem.
