USB 3 port colour

Heya guys,

Over the past few months I put a lot of time and effort into making my rig all black and white with little green accents, and I've succeeded. Everything is colour co-ordinated now.

Except the blue USB 3 ports on the front of the case!

Now, I could take them out, but I kinda need to use them and I'd be left with holes in the case. I realize that painting them is not a viable options due to the extra pins within the connector and it'd probably come straight off when you plug and unplug a device anyway.

Can I solder new ones in? How would this go? Would love to hear from anyone.

Thanks!

why not try to use a sharpie and make them black and see if it comes off. if it does you can think about buying different ones later.

Or get small rubber cover which are the exact size of the plug.

Ebay search for USB protectors nets quite a few black silicon inserts that can be fitted into the ports when they aren't in use, keeping that ninjalike aesthetic :)

Are they screwed in or soldered? There's a number of green ones around, typically on the Razer versions of cases I've seen so it may be a case of just swapping the front panel USB3 connector assembly.

I have a check and they're screwed into the front of the I/O PCB.

I am assuming if I get black or green replacements I can just screw these in?
But where the hell do I get them.

Is your build in a Prodigy? They should screw in as far as I can see on another forum (not sure if I'm allowed to post the link?) - edit just saw your post. That will teach me to start writing and then get distracted by work!!

Looking at the Razer edition of the H440 they appear to be screw in connectors as well. The two Green USB's screw in to the IO PCB but they look to be a standard 2x USB3 to Internal adaptors aside from the colour. This would suggest that a spare part replacement should be available? Not sure of the cost though.

Emailing NZXT might be worth a try. I'm not sure anywhere else I've seen the green ports.

You could just cover them with silicone grommets like I did with Dragon's Mist

We're searching for you fella, but sadly even if I made them up for you they would still be Blue as that is the standard colour for 3.0 :( I'm in agreement with TPC & Excalabur50 in the use of the blanking dust grommets.

If you can't get a spare from NZXT you could always buy a Razer edition S340, swap out the green ports and then on sell the S340 with blue USB. It would cost you a bit in second hand value loss but depends on how badly you want the green.

Even then it may not match the colour you're after exactly.

That's not a cheap power cable

Thanks for the input guys!

I don't reaaally want to use covers as I do actually use the ports on a daily basis (mainly for my phone) and I'll have to keep unplugging and replugging stuff, and I'll give myself a week before I start losing the covers while the USB ports are in use.

I was hoping to find something like this, but with USB 3 connectors in black:

I'm starting to think that I should just be patient and see if I ever run into someone that has black or green USB 3 front panel connectors and see if they are up for a swap.

In the mean time, I did stroll the bay a bit and I found these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-3-0-A-T...772722?hash=item339e655372:g:ek8AAOSwX~dWjQAw

The seller specifically states that the item comes as the one in the photo, so these definitely look black to me (he also does loads of blue ones). I reckon with the 90 degree pins it's probably meant to go on circuit boards (as it does state laptop), but it makes me wonder what the inside of my current USB ports look like.

You guys reckon I can fit this into my front connectors somehow?

Why not just permanently wire up 2 USB hubs on to your desk in a tidy fashion?
You'll never see the blue then :)

Dell makes their workstation PC so beautiful. The Optiplex7020 and 7010 have USB3.0 ports but they are black as well ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Razor paid $380,000 so they could have green USB 3.0 ports, Fractal do have black ports on the Define R5, they are blue on the Define S you'll be hard pressed to find genuine USB 3.0 ports that aren't Blue "That is the industry colour standard", those that you shared above from feebay are not USB 3.0 they are 9 pin USB 2.0 sockets. USB 3.0 sockets are 19 Pin ;) we found loads last night advertised and labeled as 3.0 when they were clearly 2.0.

Tom's Define S has black USB 3 ports at the front:

I get that it's the industry standard for the average consumer to easily distinguish them but I find it odd that no one has made black ones yet, purely for looks.

USB 3 headers on your motherboard are 19 pins, the actual sockets only have 9 pins per socket. Then again, one header can support up to 2 sockets. These are genuine USB 3 ports, with the extra pins the middle that have only been there since USB 2, and the blue plastic. They only have 9 pins per socket.

This is a picture of some of the first USB 3 sockets ever. Note how it only has 18 pins, 9 pins per socket (as they are stacked).

So the black ones in the link could very well be legit USB 3 ports. I don't see why anyone would fake a USB 2 socket to look exactly like a USB 3 socket and then sell it for 50p more when, if you have the skill to do that, you could probably just as well make genuine 3.0 sockets.

Edit;
Oh, also USB 2 sockets only have 4 pins:

And these are from Maplin's so I'm assuming that is pretty legit.

Either way, I have shot Fractal an email and hopefully they can help me further.
