Upgrading the fourm?

Hi Guys,

I know the forum does its job and everything. However it does seem to be getting a little dated and not utilising everything to its potential. I know how much work it takes to make a new forum and the amount of messing around in code. I also understand that I'm the "New guy" and i haven't built my way into the community yet.

The main thing I think is missing is a "Mark as answer" Function. This allows the user that asked a question to mark an answer as the one that solved their problem. This would help users in the future who may have the same problem find their answer quicker and easier. There are also many other functions but this was just one i used as an example.

Thoughts?

Yours,
Brad

On a forum such as this, there rarely is just a simple right answer. Usually takes a few posts to diagnose and help solve the problem.
We aren't really a point based community - the regulars all know which people contribute useful information and so having a mark for solving the problems isn't really necessary.

We went through a complete forum change about a year ago now, so some of the small issues are still being worked out.

I don't really think there's a need for big changes like that. Once you've been here a bit longer, you'll just get used to everything, and see how easily things flow without the need for yahoo answers style point scoring.

It's not as nice as it used to be, but there were some security issues so we've just had to deal with it.

I like this format. A couple other forums I frequent use it and I think it's the best and smoothest running. I hope they don't change it. Don't care for "reps" or "answers" or all that stuff.

I honestly think it works fine the way it is, but I can imagine that it takes some getting used to when you visit a lot of other forums.

Yea its just my Opinion. It is a very steady and stable fourm though that just works as i can see that is compared to some newer forums that still have a lot of bugs.

The idea wasn't to have it for stats or anything like that. I see as well josh that there is usually quite a few posts that go backwards and forward before any picture gets created and the problem is solved.

I suppose if it ain't broke don't fix it. :P

we aren't a quick google search support forum, i think this is just fine. i prefer the simple stuff.

9 times out of ten with those backwards and forwards, it might answer other questions, you can just go to the last pages o see the solution if thats all you want to read :)

QFT.

We have discussions here and it's not so much a Q&A forum. PC Gamer forum is a Q&A forum and while I post there often, there isn't much personality.

There are several leading forum softwares at the moment, and this happens to be one of them ipb, phpbb, and also xenforo are all good examples.
All are well supported but each has it's pro's and con's.
It can be very difficult for admins to get the right feel for there forum at the best of times, but at the end of the day functionality plays a big role in any decision making, and what suits your needs better. There are forums that offer more feature sets but security is lacking or they just don't have the content ability as others.
I dare say in the future vbulletin will make yet more upgrades, and bring default styling up to date, but in the mean time i think the guys have done a fantastic job getting the oc3d css into the theme.

I think James summed it up pretty well tbh. We are not the type of forum where the majority of threads are questions with one simple answer.

Yeah this isn't stack overflow. (only just spotted this thread)

Some stuff may come in time, but the more junk we add on and stick into the system the slower things become. Right now we're on quite a nice bullet proof'ed version of the software. Screwing around with that.. is not a small task.

Don't make it a hurry indeed mate :)
To me personally it's all about the community, and not about the fancy features of the forums :)
