My choices so far are

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.16GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

(£160.99)

Asus P5Q Pro Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

(£105.99)

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Platinum Series DDR2

(£57.49)

which would be £324.27 (inc shipping)

Could i do better for my money?????

That looks like a solid setup. The asus p45 was pretty good from memory and overclocked well, an X48 would probably double the price. If you want a challenge, you could have a look at a Q6600 or similar depending on the price and then overclock it. Obviously, this reuqires decent cooling and if this is mainly for gaming, your probably best off with the dual core. You pays your money and takes your choice. if you wanted to save money, you could probably go for a lesser processor and clock it (again requiring some decent cooling).

I think that's a good setup for the money tho. Just make sure to shop around for some bits, I think I have seen that RAM cheaper (may be wrong tho and I can't think where)

also there is a processor called an e7200 also an e8300 which is newer yorkfield tchnology i just sold a e8300 myself for £90 but also have i bought a q9300 for £130 the e7200 should be able to pick 1 up for about £75

just a few thoughts on your build

Your setup looks good so far. Its good to see you going with the E8500 instead of the Q6600. The Q6600 is older, and being phased out this year so I wouldn't recommend it. As for graphics card an HIS 4830 should be more than enough for gaming on most games, and its great value and performance for money. If you haven't chosen a PSU, I think the Corsair HX620W PSU would suit your needs. It has enough power and is modular too. Its also got many awards, and has a 5 year warranty.

If you need any more help choosing parts, like a case, I'm happy to help. If these parts are too expensive, let me know and I'll choose new ones. :)

Yeah, buy an e8400, save £25 and change 1 setting in the bios a bit and have yourself an equivalent E8600!

I will be staying with my current graphics until later this year. I'm thinking my Current PSU will be more then adiquate for the new build.

Whichever CPU I end up getting it will be being overclocked. I went for the 8500 with a hope to achieving higher clocks.

If you are still thinking about a quad, Intel have just dropped the price on their socket 775 quads. Something like a Q9400 may be slightly more affordable.

Yes I am still thinking about a quad. This is good news.

I wonder how long it will take to see these price drops at the retailers??

From a rough coversion from US$ to £ on the before and after Intel prices against what Scan was selling Intel Quads for, it appears they have already been passed on.

AMD have more than matched the Intel price cuts so we may not have seen the end of it.

I was looking at the Q9550 and a striker II extreme MB a month ago since I was buying a new pc. Suddenly I read around and found some reviews for the new i7 and checked the prices. I live in Norway, so the prices may be quite different here. When I looked around, the Q9550 and the striker MB had a price of about 440USD and 420USD. The i7 920 has a price here in Norway of 397USD!!! So... "Fake" quadcore or "Real" quadcore? I went for the i7. No doubt whatsoever. I love new technology. The i7 and the x58 chipset really does it. And for running Xfire you couldn't make a better choice. Even though you need new memory I would say it's worth it if thinking about investing in the future. I have never in my life seen a pc running Windows Vista react this fast. You still would do a good deal with setup you have planned for, but take a peek at the reviews around, they really says it all :)

You make a very valid point, the CPU,s are not the problem its the fact that the mobo and the memory are twice the price that puts me off not the price of the CPU's.

The question is, is the extra performance worth the extra £

where is the best bang for bucks??

High end P45 mobo, 4Gb Good DDR2, core 2 duo/ quad

OR

Low end X58 mobo, low end 3Gb DDR3, i7 920 ?

I must admit I am tempted to blow my budget (which has already crept up to about £400- £450)

Have you also taken a look at the Phenom II? It's turned out to be a good clocker with some serious performance results which really compete with the C2Q series.

TBH I hadn't even give them a thought!! I'll have a look round though.

got any good links reviews or to direct comparisons ie C2 quad versus Phenom II

Should provide you with some :D Links to a dozen reviews right there.

EDIT: I've taken a look at the first four reviews, it seems to be quite on par with the C2Q series, sometimes just a bit below i7 depending on the game. One benchmark says the PhII gets half the framerate of a C2Q series in crysis though :/ I don't tend to believe that, other tests say they are a lot closer.
