Triple Monitor Upgrade. Need new GPUs??

Hey guys,

so I'm about to order 3 QNIX 27inch 2560x1440@60Hz panels, these are also overclockable, so if possible I'll be hitting ~ 80-100 Hz, but not counting on it. Mainly need it for the extra desktop space. I do like my gaming but I can handle to continue on a single panel for now and will move my way up to gaming across all 3.

I feel I have maxed out on my 6950s 2 gb, even the two in CF are starting to stutter when using my current Shimian 27 inch @ 2560x1440@60Hz. The latest driver has helped quite a bit but I think the two extra panels will max it out. 5760x1080 gaming is ok for me for now so if my cards can handle that I'll stay at it till the new GPUs show up in Q4 '13/Q1 '14.

So back to the question-
Stay at the 6950 CF, move up to a GTX 780, GTX 690 or get a Titan?

Don't want this to be a panel discussion so lets just focus on how much horsepower I'll need for using 2560x1440 <60Hz, 5760x1080 and finally down the road the monstrous 7680x1440 gaming.

As TTL said, you are going to need some serious graphics power for that, just imagine the sort of VRam usage you are going to get running that sort of resolution.

If you think you're struggling with your current resolution then imagine running 3 times that on them cards!!

I don't know exactly what sort of fire power you'd need for that res but I imagine it would be Tri-SLI GTX 780's region or something like that??

Maybe wait and see what the 9970 bring as I believe that is meant to be out sometime around next month based on the rumors on the web.

The 9970 should be out this month the 25th was the last rumor and they are supposed to be 4gb cards so they might be worth looking into when they come out

After doing a bunch of looking around for the few people running 7680x1440 and online reviews/ comparisons im thinking of the 7970 6Gb edition. TTL thanks for the abundance of videos on the 770s and Titans, watched I think close to 3 hours of your stuff on youtube. I would love to get a Titan but with the cost of the monitors already going to be ~885 I need a cheaper alternative for the time being. Also since schools starting back up i've gotta cover those damn student fees first.

Any ideas on the memory on the new 9970 cards? Like Excalabur50 said the 4 Gb might be able to handle it and I wouldnt mind the wait. Do you guys think they'll do a model with extra Vram like they did with the 7970s that had a 3Gb version as well as a 6Gb, maybe a 4Gb base model with a special 6 or 8 Gb version for those needing the extra Vram?

Also my current mobo only has PCI-Express 2.0, would this or my cpu cause any issue?

thoughts??

I wouldn't be surprised if Sapphire did an 8gb vapor x edition also your cpu and board are ok

Thanks Excalabur50. Fingers crossed they drop that card soon, till then the poor 6950s will have to cry a little.

im going to order the panels this week so i can get the extra space up for now. plus itll give me the time to compare the QNIX to the shimian I currently have. ill stick with single panel gaming and once the new card comes out ill grab one. Two of my roommates have 770s running in their rigs so i may steal them for a little to do some testing in single and sli configurations. ill post some benchmarks and photos once its all up.

thanks for the help guys

i thought i had my mind set with the 9970 on release but after looking into prices of the 7970/7990 i found that the 7990 is only 100 bucks more. Do you guys think that the pricing scheme of the new 9970/9990 will be similar to the current 7970/7990? or is amd going to drop the 9990 at the 1000+ dollar mark like they did when the 7990 first came out??

BTW adamthepolak don't double post as you can get into trouble for it if you need to add more info just use the edit button :-) now as to pricing they should be somewhere in the region or a bit higher than when the current gen came out so it will be really good value for money, and just cause you got three screens @1400 don't mean you can't drop down to 3x1080 to game till your new card comes out!!

9970 is supposed to be on par with a titan at slightly cheaper or as just as cheap as the 780. Should have around 4gb of vram as said above and a 384bit bus but possibly a 512bit bus. The "bit bus" is how much data can be pushed through at any second, the higher the better. At 3x 1440p you WILL need that amount of bus width.

4k res(3840*2160p)= 8294400px
2560*1440p*3(screens)= 11059200px

So as you can see it has more PX than a 4k screen. Gonna need serious horses dude.

On three panels you are going to need something like 3 x GTX 780s or even Titans (6gb vram). I would be more inclined to go with NVidia cards as their support for 3 cards is probably a little better than AMD. Having said that AMD have improved a lot with their support for 3 and 4 GPU setups lately.

Thanks Excalabur50 and my bad about the double post, new to the forum and i wont double post anymore. I was thinking the same and im sure ill be happy with 1080 on the triple monitors for the time being.

Didn't even think about comparing it to 4K res. yet but holy crap thats some serious pixel count... got a little giddy about it.

Regarding the "bit bus", I just wanted to make sure i understand it properly. Bit bus is the amount of data that can be sent from the memory at once?

Unfortunately because of my mobo im limited to 2 cards max right now so 3/4 card performance isnt an issue for me yet. I'm going to upgrade my mobo, cpu, cooler and ram down the road but the individual thats interested in buying my current parts wants to hold off till october to buy.

About the bit bus question. The answer is yes. Its how much information can be thrown at any one point in time -bigger is better- and the speed of the memory is simply how fast it can transfer the data. At those resolutions you WILL NEED speed and large bus widths.

Kaapstad said 3 780s. He's basically right but a titan in this case may be the better option because of the Vram increase.

As i said earlier though IMO it's worth waiting until Sept 25th for any new GPU purchase. Newer cards from AMD will be announced and should have bigger bus widths than 384bit and more VRAM on the cards which is exactly what you need.

Thanks NeverBackDown, i guess the wait for the new card beings.

Any ideas how the acoustics are going to be on the new cards? I love my two 6950s but they sound like a fucking jet engine is going off when i have games running. Im OCD about trying to keep my computer quiet so i may just go and drop a watercooling loop in finally.

I budgeted out a water cooling loop but I don't have another 600/500 to drop on it so I guess that'll be a Christmas gift to myself lol

Wait until more concrete information is released about AMDs newer cards before diving into watercooling. Best to just wait it off then get everything when its released.

so rumors are popping up like crazy and it looks like the new 209X card (x970 by past naming) is going to have 4 gb of vram and a nice 512 bit memory bus at around 550 - 650 dollar. performance is being said to be equal to the titan, if not better. if this is true im grabbing one on launch day, fingers crossed that they'll be a 8 gb model coming out :D

i got my two QNIX 27s just sitting here right now as ive got to go and pick up my DP to DL-DVI adapters tomorrow after class. both panels overclocked to 80hz and have minor back light bleeding at the bottom of the screen, going to fix this tomorrow as well.

Seemingly Sapphire have had them for awhile now and have sent some out for people to play with and I have had 2 emails now from AMD stating big things are happening on the 25th.......2 more days in Aussie time pretty excited to see what they are bringing to the table :dribble:

Just a quickie: Do newly announced GPU's get announced on say September 25th and then you can pre-order, or do they just release?

im counting down the days on my end.

heres the link for the AMD

damn countdown timer is going to kill me slowly.

BUT the monitors or on my desk/ minifridge and jesus is this ever a alot of space.
Heres a photo for anyone who wants to see. These will be wall mounted but im waiting for the two new brackets to be dropped off.
