Tri-Monitor Setup Question

Hi Oc3d,

normally i'm only a lurker here always finding great advice and opinions on Hardware. Now i need your help with something.

I'm currently running a XL2420Z from BenQ and a old TV 32" from Phillips as a Dual-Monitor Setup. I have around 1.5k € Budget for finding a solid Monitor Stand (Tri-Setup or Maybe Quad-Setup if possible moneywise). I want atleast 1 144hz Monitor i don't really need IPS but i wouldn't say no to it, if needed i could raise the Budget to 2.5k €

Has anyone a Setup around here that is totally satisfying that he would recommend?

I was obviously already looking into a lot of Screens but i just want some fresh oppinions on a Tri-Monitor Setup only for Gaming and Multimedia purpose.

I have 3 Dells setup and love it, centre screen is a higher quality one for better colour repro and the outer two look identical from the front so it's lush.

That comprises of a U2413 and 2xU2412M's

none are 144hz (because I personally, don't need it, and prefer colour and IQ over Hz any day)

All IPS screens

My number one piece of advice is: buy screens that at the very least look the same, I think it looks 100x better if they do.

What GPU(s) are you using and what sort of games?

I have seen some nice monitor stands but depends how you want to set it up. 2x2 (four monitors in a square) or three side by side with an overhead accessory display.

I agree with Sub - get the monitors that look the same. It's much nicer.

To be honest if I was starting out now I'd go one 34" 3440*1440 100hz Gsync or freesync for the main monitor with an overhead 24 or 27" accessory display mounted vertically. I always find I want one gaming screen (or in my case 3 set up in surround) plus one extra screen for music/youtube/forums and facebook.

I quite like the idea of a massive centre screen, then getting the side screens to match on the opposite axis, then turn them 90 degrees, so you have tall screens on the edge, helps a lot of web reading, and you don't have an overtly massive wide screen then.

PLP (Portrait, Landscape, Portrait orientation) displays were popular choices amongst AMD users - They seem to be more forgiving with custom resolutions than NVidia. Speaking of which - if you use NV and want surround to work properly make sure all your surround monitors have the same sync polarity at their native resolution or it won't work.
There are workarounds but they're messy and not the most reliable.

One more good point thanks to Sub - how large is your desk? I can fit 3 24s but nothing else as far as width. My desk is approx 1500mm wide.

thanks for your feedback, i was planning on going for 3 or 4 with exactly the same look, i'm with you on that one.

I'm now rocking a 780 but i plan on going for kaby lake and a 1080ti soon so i guess there shouldn't be any problem gnu wise then.

I would want a 3 side by side with one overhead if going for four or a simple 3 side by side i just don't want to have 3 display stands on my table anymore.

I'm playing all sorts of games, RTS, FPS, Mobas, Casuals, MMO's but i just like 144hz and i would love to get a IPS with 144hz but i don't know if it fits money wise for me. I was also thinking on going big with the ASUS pg279q but there hella expensive in my opinion, i'm not really sure maybe i will try one. I want one high quality for the center screen in the side by side, the other ones are just for multimedia purpose or maybe for work on office programs nothing more, so they don't need to be too insane.

my desk is 2200mm roughly and has a depth around 650mm - 800mm not quite sure. It's a monster of a desk haha the plate is also 50-70mm thick.

thanks for your opinions and i'm looking forward for your next comments.

You could always get a 144hz centre, and two matching 60hz side panels. This way you keep the costs down and you have 144hz for games that don't work well in Surround.

TTL did a review here of overkill triple screens on the Swift PG279 running off SLI 1080s so it will give you some nice ideas for how far you can go.

For FPS games I find the surround screens give me a headache* as you're changing direction so quickly and so often. For racing and flight sims triple screens are brilliant.

edit - *could be because I only have 60hz screens or the fps drops. Either way after an hour or so I have to change games.

TBH I think you may be better off with one 34' screen like these
https://www.asus.com/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG348Q/

I have had 3 screens myself in the past and they can be a PITA whereas there is less mucking around with a single screen

Agreed - as I mentioned above if I was starting out again I'd go that route with maybe a 24 or 27" accessory display. Multiples still have great benefits and for pure realestate you can't go past them but for functionality and user friendliness ultrawide is the way to go.

I Kind of like the Idea of one ultrawide in Front and one 27" for Browsing streams vods etc. But i also use a Second pc sometimes or would like to dock my mcbook pro to one of the screens and a 34" ultrawide wouldnt give me that Option i guess :-/ also the 34" dont have 144hz yet or am i wrong on that one?

The Review from TTL was insane But i cant afford a 1080 sli and 3 pg279q thats totally Overkill in my Opinion even tho it is insanely awesome

MacBook Pro can drive an ultrawide just fine. Some of them even have Thunderbolt connections (Look at some of the LG's) however the 3440x1140 displays aren't at 144hz yet. They're up to 100hz for the top end or you can get a 2560x1080 144hz but you obviously lose resolution to get the extra hz.

And 44hz is nothing in the grand scheme of things, would be different if you were talking about the new 240hz monitors

This LG is on my short list for my next monitor. But, if you found that on sale, then find a couple of cheap used Dell 30" monitors for either side.

definitly an awesome screen but i guess it won't fit my needs. I'm actually thinking about going the standard 3 side by side way. But i have not decided which screens to use. Someone thinking there will maybe a price drop with the new ROG series from CES17 coming?
