to RAID or not to RAID

All...would you...

1. Add a single 150gb Raptor as boot/OS/apps/Game drive

or

2. Opt for 2 36gb raptors in a RAID 0 array?

IMO raptors are a waste. Far too expensive for too little storage. 2x 200/250GB drives would come to the same as a single raptor and be just as fast in raid, with so much more room.

Burst speeds and access times of any other sata drives can't match that of the raptors in RAID Ham, you should know that.

I'm not a big fan of RAID as your OS drive tbh. Don't ask me why - I just feel safer having a fast single drive with a partition on it.

If u`ve only got 2 SATA connections, u`re better off using a small IDE drive for u`r OS.

oops sorry, I said IDE >.<

I am aware of that frag, i just couldn't justify spending £75 on a less-than 40gb drive. SATA2 is plenty fast enough really and you can get it so cheap these days.

Totally agreed. With normal SATA drives getting 220mbps+ and costing ~ £50 for 160-200gb+ what's the point on spending 3x that on a 150gb drive?

can you add some linkys to good HDDs guys as I dont have a clue!!??

also, was gonna run the array for OS, Games and Apps only...does that sound OK?

I'd run a RAID partition for the OS and one for games and apps. Don't put valuable stuff on RAID 0.

Get some Seagate 7200.10 or Hitachi 7KXXX (I have 2 x 160 drives)

a raid 0 will have the same fault tolerance as a single hard drive would it not?i'd prob buy 3 250gb hard drives (they're what, £60 each now) and raid them.

Ye but 2 x the drives = 2 x the fault tolerance

Have decided to buy 1 raptor 150gb

Please check my other thread and provde as much feedback as possible on the 590sli Asus C2D board...thanks guys.
