Titan Black Won't Be Black

no that's the dude who wasted his money on 4 290x, 4 Titans and 2 690s.

This reminds me though, Alpenwasser has had his Titan for nearly a year now and the build is still not done. I wonder where he is actually.

hes around anyways, i saw him posting in project logs today in fact..

so disappointed with this. the whole point of the titan was that it was a special one off overkill, sort of like the kingpin edition 780Tis. would have waited for the more sensible 7 series instead of getting one if i knew they would continue the line. now the titan is pointless :(

inb4 shitstorm for mentioning the kingpin.

it was pretty obvious that the Titan was just an appetizer

the whole point of the Titan was to extract as much money from Kaapstad as physically possible, now they have seen he has four 290x's they are trying to win back the market share with a Black Edition that's basically the same but might just step up a notch in a couple of benchmarks. I see what your doing nVidia  and I am pretty sure that it will work.

This is QFT.

Kaapstad. Why you no buy nvidia? They need to lay off 30% workforce now...

Kaapstad is a bencher guys, lay off him. :P

I'd buy one of these....

....totally :S

I mean think of all the ladeez you'll earn

And that would be zero ^_^

The only card women care about is the one in your wallet.

I'll have you know they go mental if you forget their birthday card too! lesson painfully learned.

Women and cards of any kind = The devil.

No truer words spoken!

In all honesty though this is really a 780ti with 6Gb of vram with a titan feature added on.. Are those 2 things really worth spending another $250 on top of the already super expensive 780ti? Nope not really. Still seems like another Floating point card.

Indeed, But someone will find an excuse and make up a story of how he/she needs the floating point performance, Theres always 1 ^_^

mate, anything beyond the 500$ mark isn't about value anymore. if you want it bad enough then you will pay the extra 250$.
just compare a custom waterloop with an AIO solution, the AIO is 1/10 of the price and the performance difference is maybe 10%, still people do it and not regret it.

Do you think given 3 or 4 cards it might stack up to be a sensible option for 4k, obviously price/performance is irrelevant there but could they actually be the most capable solution.

Could be yes but I'd prefer to wait until the 4K panel technology has come to a good mature point a bit like 1440P/1600P is now with the Dell Ultrasharps and Asus line :)

You've not seen the UP3214Q then :o :fapfapfap: I think that's a great excuse for 4 Titan Blacks if you have the unlimited money cheat activated. I agree though for people with finite money waiting for the cheaper 4k panels and volta sounds promising.

The UP3214Q is nice but I would prefer to wait until the panel technology has matured so we can get even more features with the panels at a lower price but the same quality or better quality :)

Haha, I'm here! :D

I have actually assembled HELIOS in a temporary ghetto setup (hurray, the
M/B is still OK after having painted it! :) ) and started to do BOINC on it
yesterday. Running GPUGrid and Milkyway@Home on the Titan at the moment
with double precision enabled.

I can't really run the rig 24/7 for the time being because I still have the stock
cooler on the card (and the rig is in my room), but once I have made sure that
my card is OK I'll mount the water block on it and do some 24/7 numbers. I'm
especially curious to see if there's a noticeable credits difference between operating
at double or single precision.

EDIT: Just as a side note, some BOINC projects actually state that they
can take advantage of double precision, and Milkyway@Home actually requires
it if you want to run their code on your GPU./EDIT

I then intend to start playing around with overclocks on the card and see how
that influences BOINC credits.

Oh and don't worry, the build is not cancelled or scaled back. I've needed to divert
some funds towards our server, but if things go well I should be able to properly
continue on HELIOS around March/April (hopefully  ). No matter how
long it takes, I will finish this! *

*(major unforeseen catastrophes not included in plans)

In all fairness to Kaapstad though. He is a dedicated benchmarker and also maintains a few of the benchmarking software threads here. At least I know he puts these cards to good use or pushes the limits.

Yup. It might be quite a lot of money compared to most PCs, but in the end it's
still a more or less affordable hobby compared to other stuff (cars, for example).

Besides, compared to enterprise/pro-grade components, Titans are still pretty
damn cheap. I recently looked up Hitachi's 12 GBps SAS enterprise SSD, three
of those would cost about the same as HELIOS.

Just because I don't post as often as I used to does not mean I'm gone. ;)
But yes, I don't have as much time for perusing online venues these days
as I had before college. Sorry fellas.

I shall be that one! Seriously though, I am actually curious about BOINC credits
and performance of double vs. single precision, but as said it's too early to tell
at the moment.

As for the Titan Black: It really is a bit of a bummer that this was not the original
Titan, which was then scaled down to the 780 and the 780 Ti, but in the end Nvidia
are a business and more money is probably to be made from this approach, even
if it is a bit disappointing IMHO.
