Time for a GPU upgrade I think

Can anyone suggest where my money is best spent?

I'm after a new GPU that will play all of the latest and upcoming games completely maxed out at 1080p.

I'm told a 7950 may do it?

It's very possible that I'll be going 1440p at some point, so the ability to play maxed out at 1440 is pretty much a necessity also.

I've been looking at the 7970, which I can get one for under £300. Is this a good choice or is my money better spent elsewhere? Or perhaps I'm better waiting out for something that hasn't been released yet?

Is it true I should just get the cheapest card that has the particular chip I'm after?

Any advice is welcome :)
My current card is lagging like an absolute mother bitch in Metro LL. That's with the settings turned down some. If i turn em down any more there wont be any graphics left! lol

Cheers,
Chris.

AAA titles maxed @ 1440p with a 7950? sure, np. enjoy your 10fps though
1440p maxed is really demanding. might want to step up to something like a 780 to get a playable framerate

Yeah 1440 is going to be pretty demanding. You're gonna want a GTX 770 at least. 780 if you can afford it. It's awful pricey but will max anything at 2560x1440. A 770 will max just about everything but you'd have to turn down AA a notch or two on the most demanding games like Crysis 3.

1440p is BRUTAL on your graphics card. Even a Titan or 780 struggle to deliver playable frame rates. Be realistic. I would suggest either sticking to 1080p or spending much, much more on graphics. If your budget limits your graphics card choices > 1080p.

Arh really? You got me all hyped, then i was like

No idea what to do.

EDIT: Just noticed you said 7950. This is what was recommended to me as a bottom level for 1080p gaming. For 1440p I was suggesting the 7990. Hopefully you made a mistake and now you're gonna tell me how well it will perform?

Cheers,
Chris.

you didn"t say anything about a 7990 in your OP..

Haha now i made a mistake. I meant 7970.

according to TTLs benchmarks, those are the results for a 7970 at 1080p:

batman arkham city: 60.1
bioshock infinite: 85.7
far cry 3: 39.7
hitman absolution: 25.6
metro 2033: 51.3
sleeping dogs: 43.2

as that's 1080p, you can remove like 1/3 for 1440p performance i'd say
wouldn't be enough for me tbh

Thanks fella!
Yeah I think you're right.

Any new GPU's on the horizon or is now the time to buy?

Note: I don't really want to let any overclocking ability sway the decision. I wanna treat it like a bonus.

I think its always best to buy what you need/want when you need/want it. Something Ive learned over the years is that no matter how long you wait, no matter how much shopping around and no matter how hard you try to time it, something newer, cheaper and better will come out the instant you buy something else. Its just the way it is. So yeah, buy what you want/need when you want/need it. :)

get something like at least sli 770s if you can afford not
no new cards expected to release soon

I want to watercool and i won't have the rad area to cool 2 GPU's :/
Need a single GPU solution. I'm looking around for the cheapest 780 and i came across this...

Does this chart look right to you guys? It's a good way for me to decide where i'd like to send my money. I thought the 7970 was much higher in the list than it is, i see why you say 770 etc now.

Yeah im used to that too. Trying to avoid it haha.

Thats a good deal! Thanks i'll bear it in mind :)

You don't have to look at charts, it's pretty clear atm. :p Titan>780>770>7970 GHz Edition>7970 & 680>670

Dual core cards are sh..

Thanks guys but I'm not so sure now. Pretty much every chart contradicts another.
I want to list them in order of performance only. Antihero's wee list seems to make the most sense?

From the first link I sent there is a drop down menu with the option "Conclusion: Performance per dollar"

Not exactly what you're after but.....

Arh ok so my money is best spent on a 770? Epic 1080p gaming, may struggle with 1440p gaming?

What about the 4GB 770? Tom says in a review 4 Gb is for anything above 1080p gaming?

Remember, i want to put a waterblock on whichever card i decide on. Incase that might interfere with any decision making.
