The Ryzen 7 Upgrade

Hey guys,

It was time to upgrade the faithful and lovely 3570k, that had been spinning on 4.2ghz since the day it got installed on a mere 1.150 volt, super stable! But as time moved on and requirements got higher and higher, and the fact that in some games i was hitting 100% load and it became a bit sluggish, it was time to hit the buy button, but before we dive in the new stuff, here is some pictures of my old workhorse.

Spec:
Msi Mpower z77
Intel 3570k @ 4.2ghz.
16gb 1600mhz corsair vengeance low profile
MSI Geforce gtx 970 100ME version
Asus STX II soundcard
250gb samsung, 180gb intel ssd, 3tb wd blue
Corsair Hx750i

And then now onto the new stuff, Throwing its awesome weight around the corner, it is nothing less then the Asus Crosshair vi Hero

Memory was supposed to be a corsair vengeance 16gb 3200mhz kit as pictured above, but its faulty, the system just locks up all the time, luckely i have 16gb of 2133 crucial stuff around, and it will stay on that untill i get new memory sorted.

And ofcourse we have our new heart, the AMD Ryzen 7 1700

Put in the case

Add all the other stuff back in.

Up and running after many headaches trying to find out what the problem was, note the cheap green memory sticks in there.

Yes i will do some overclocking when i get around to deciding to custom loop it or stick an AIO in, I have parts to do custom loop but need a few new things which works out almost as expensive as an aio, choices...

When the replacement memory is in, i will put a pic in here and report on how it works with some proper memory speeds, i think this cheap crucial stuff isnt helping my nvme drive all that much, but hey it runs!

Cheers for stopping by!

Update, back on my Z77 for now, the ryzen setup just keeps crashing and doing weird performance drops, i cant work and game on those conditions till there have been some revisions in bios and stuff getting fixed.

Which BIOS you got? The 0504?

Tom posted the 0505 BIOS in a different thread for the CH6 board you got. Just remember if Asus hasn't posted this officially, then it will most likely void the warranty. Should note it's also a beta BIOS.

Edit: Just checked the Asus website.

They released this 0902 BIOS on the 13th of this month. It should be newer but I am not exactly sure if it is. I assume so since the number is 902. It's description is this "Improve system stability". So this is exactly what you are looking for.

Might also be worth downloading the QVL file? It is supposed to better support memory. I would have thought this comes along with the BIOS though.

I put that bios in yesterday, and for whatever reason, it just crashes hard, not even a blue screen, just instant back to dos mode, sometimes that even happens when i change my xonar from speakers to headphone mode, and then it resets a few times, forgets all the steam settings for whatever reason and it works as long as i dont touch my audio control panel, which is impossible.

Then theres the sudden massive fps drops in Guild Wars 2, and yes i know that engine isnt the best, but its my main game and that also sometimes just dies to dos, i am quite tempted to shove this back to the stores, BUT i know its early stuff that needs maturing, and its probably a combo of hardware that i have that could be responsible for these issues. I do want to put it on a test bench kind of setup and fiddle around while i keep my z77 running for the time being.

However, when its not crashing or being weird, it is absolutely awesome, unfortunately, it doesnt last that long.

Nah currently the set is just sitting on the desk, not connected, i will wait for a new bios before doing anything else.

Returning all the hardware and get my money back, i do not have the patience to sit around waiting in hopes my insane instabilities (even with latest bios updates) to get fixed.

ffs, start up skype and it crashes to dos and ends up in a bootloop untill i reset the bios config again, which was stock anyway. Done and dusted.

I think if you'd have waited a few more weeks before you jumped on Ryzen you'd have had a much better experience. Never jump for at least a month, especially with a new architecture. ASUS have some of the worst BIOS's for Ryzen to be honest, whilst MSI are pulling away with the Titanium board which isn't that much more here in the UK. I'm using a C6H on 1002 BIOS and cant get my RAM past 2400 which sucks when its 3200.

I can understand why you got frustrated and went back to your old build, but do you ever plan to go back to Ryzen or maybe a 6 or 8 Core Intel? Just curious.

A good friend gave me his Msi x99 gaming 7 motherboard, updated its bios and just smacked a 6800k in there with a quad channel dominator platinum 2666 kit as well. Now my most played game is only using 30% cpu instead of 100% so its a win there for me.

There's your problem, still using DOS, should make the switch to windows :p

Skype crashes all the time on my PC. Especially if I leave it running and shut down Win 10. It causes an exception, and the PC just sits there refusing to shut down.

A common crash if you have an asus sound card installed, i have seen this on my z77, ryzen 7 and now the x99, also in my brothers pc which also has a xonar.

It probably doesn't help that I have two Xonars in this PC and one in the other, then.

My SB Tit HD isn't being used so I will probably put that into my daily rig.

Seriously I would have been a little bit more patient though.
