The rumours about the RX Vega being 2+ months away are false

The recent rumours that AMD's RX Vega releasing 2+ months after the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition are false. Here is what actually was said at AMD's recent webcast.

Technically they aren't wrong. Frontier edition isn't for gaming and is a month and a half away. If they released the gaming GPUs after, it would be closer to 2 months maybe more

To late, ordered my 1080ti on Friday sick of the way AMD do their thing. :p

No doubt about it AMD is sending conflicting messages about Vega. And this type of mishandling is extending to other AMD Product Launches. Lisa Su may be a brilliant engineering mind but she doesn't come across as possessing the juice to whip people in line.

The only things I have seen so far that I believe are...

Some one posts an order form online that was seen from a company who sells custom PCBS. Just two were ordered by AMD. This was oo, last September?

Raja posts on Twitter saying "In Taiwan talking about Vega !!" or something/somewhere like that. People reply to his tweet, he replies "Vega is a long way off".

We see a rig with what is apparently a Vega card in it. It has a really odd PCB with an extension on the back with a USB 3 connector in shrouded in duct tape.

AMD post the Vega logo at random intervals.

AMD announce the Frontier card.

Other than that lot? everything else you have probably read is bull toffee. Going on the past? AMD released Fury X (their last big card) in the summer, but it wasn't available until September and even then OCUK only had 9 of each make/variant in stock and they moved very, very slowly.

The only rumour lately that I might even possibly believe is that there are supply issues. This makes sense, because they had the same issues with Fury X. Mind you, even that might be BS.

I quote Kevin Bloody Wilson..

I bought my ASUS Fury Strix in September of 2015, a non-reference GPU, from OCUK. The Fury line was widely available in the UK weeks before that time. I wouldn't have bought the GPU unless it was available en mass.

I don't remember the specific dates tbh mate. I mean, it was almost two years ago.

I remember going away on a holiday in May. It was almost June. Was only for a week. During that week Nvidia announced and released and stocked the 980Ti. People couldn't believe it was only £550 or whatever it was. A few days later (now we are now heading into June) AMD announce Fury X @ £529. A few weeks later pre orders appeared. Then my mate Greg orders one from Scam, gets it a few days later. Then there are none. No pre orders no cards. AMD blame the interposer (SIC possibly).

Around September time stock finally arrives, but is severely limited in numbers. As I said before, 9 cards from each Manu (so 9 XFX, 9 Giga etc). They don't even sell out. Some of them cling on to like 2/3 for months because every one already bought the 980Ti which turned out to be the correct decision.

The only reason I remember is because I checked my old receipts to see how long I've had my current GPU and it was early September 2015. When I bought the GPU, there were 10+ in stock. Whatever the case, Fury really sold poorly. I barely see anyone with Fury's of any kind these days.

Yup totally. I know a load of people who have them now, but they're not really for showing off so they don't bother haha. I think they all ended up heavily discounted and sold for cheaps.

I hope Vega is not the same sort of debacle tbh. Really hope they have their crap together for this one.

I am kinda on the fence now with Vega. With the announcement of starting to use Infinity fabric in GPU's, and the possibility we could see that in Navi. Vega driver development could take a back seat to the pretty quickly, just like Fury.

Uh what? Navi probably won't even come out till end of next year, at earliest most likely. VEGA driver development is definitely fine. Especially considering back in March iirc, most of the driver team was already working on Vega's drivers.

Correct, it will be fine for the next year to a year and a half. How long did they support the 7970 and 290 series? When Polaris launched, Fury received very little attention even though it was the top card.

I am hoping Navi comes out next year.

You do realize they both will use the infinity fabric right? Every AMD product is being created with that in mind. The GPU side of things just means Vega and Navi are going to get all the driver support because they are very similar. Polaris and before will get back burner support. Oh and all GCN products are still supported. They may not get performance increases but they still get feature support. Namely Crimson.

The Mystery Card was placed on public display in December. That turns out to be 6 months before the announcement. What is to be announced next week isn't the Gaming Version that most people are looking for. That card may not ship until the 3rd Quarter if not later. Until they are within 60 Days of Launch AMD should have been content to issue a Boiler Plate Statement "AMD is always looking to expand its offerings advancing the technology of all its product lines.

Vega will not be using Infinity Fabric.

I guess time will tell. They might get feature support in name, but there are times its broken for older cards.

Oh, and I am not saying Vega will be a bad card, quite the opposite. I think within 5 months, it will be faster than a Titan Xp by a couple of %.

I think Navi is going to be even better.

Does the VEGA hype train still have gas left in its tank?? Too little too late....

If it can rival or beat the 1080 ti then great, but if its like a 1080 then ita just ... Nvida has 4 cards at the HIGH en market, and 3 of those have nearly been out for a good 6 months eating market that AMD could never play with....

Aye. TBH even if they paper launched it now I still can not see it being ready in any volume until September, which is probably why they haven't paper launched it or given a rough date. Then there was the rumour about supply issues so yeah, I would bet they are not in a hurry to repeat Fury X, where they got about everything they could wrong.

I don't care when they release Vega. It really doesn't matter to me. All I care about is it being fast and cheap. If it is then it won't matter when they launch it (see RX 480 etc). Those cards have been popular even though they were really no better than the GTX 970. Didn't matter because they got the performance/price correct.

The only white elephant that still worries me about Vega is HBM2. Other than that? yeah, I would be as patient as need be.

That is for APU's. The stand alone GPU probably not, at least the initial launch.

Vega is the first AMD GPU to utilise the companies Infinity Fabric technology, with AMD using this tech as the basis of all their future ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) designs moving forward. This will make the creation of future APUs and other custom SoCs much easier in the future though it also offers some interesting possibilities for multi-die GPUs.
