The right time to buy a NH-D14 ?

Hello everybody,

Since I read this forum, I saw the excitement generated by the Noctua NH-D14. Buy one will undoubtedly be a very good investment but .... I noticed that it existed for some time now and I wondered if it was the right time to buy one or if it would not wait for the release of a new Noctua cooler. No other cooler has really managed to dethrone him so I guess Noctua takes its time to give us his successor but would you have any info on a possible new monster Noctua to come? Thank you

I don't think there is any new Noctua cooler planned for any time soon the only other cooler that may rival at the moment is the Alpenfohn K2 but there are no reviews for it yet so not 100% sure if it's worth getting one over the D14. It's the same price and similar design with two more heatpipes than the d14 so it might be worth waiting to see how good it actually is. Then again I doubt it will be that much better even if it is better so it's up to you if you want to buy the D14 now or wait to see how the K2 performs.

With that mind set you could be waiting your whole life, even if they bring out a new one tomorrow it won't be THAT much better. I'd just get one

-Sieb: thank you for your explanations.

-Pat123: I know the hardware evolves quickly and I thought possibly Noctua go out a replacement in the near future. I know little about the turnover rate of the coolers and the NH-D14 has almost two years I think.

-Marsey99: I have carefully read the test of Tom and he seems a good candidate but the assembly seems difficult and the efficiency very close.

Thank you for your answers.

Hey! I own one and I can say that is an awesome cooler (with 3 fans on it it's huge), but first make sure it fits your case.

Sillverarrow is dead easy to fit, really easy :)no hassle whatsoever.

My understanding was the opposite when I saw the video of Tom. The performances are so close that whatever my choice, it will be good.

the best time to buy one is before you need it

this way you have it on hand when ya do.

You're right but I have an excellent cooler and my only reason for change is to get something quieter...and more powerful if possible.

Being unfamiliar with future products to come, I preferred to ask experts like you. I would not want to buy a cooler and its price down 1 week later because the substitute is available.

no doubt

it has maintained its price for as long as I have been looking at it. It may go on sale or special at times but it pretty much stays the same price. I as well had a decent cooler that had great temps but i wanted to grow my e-peen somemore lol so I got mine when I went hexacore. I do not regret it one bit.

Lol indeed it would, Now that I have thought of it I would love to see some test's done with such a setup see if increasing the airflow that much would make a difference.

Should do as long as the airflow in the rest of the case is up to scratch. You want more air passing through the cooler per time period

Yeah it would cool better but my intrest would be more in

Noise x performance x OCing Potential = Results

I'd put up with a kinda loud PC if I could OC it to crazy clocks lol

*cough silver arrow cough*

^point = Valid good luck sourcing one in the uk took 6 weeks and 2 retailers to get mine lol

it's easy other than that damn central screw lol it's a right footer

Also I'd read more than just TTL's reviews no offence to the man he's taught me most of what I'v learned in last few months however he has a tendency to be bias at times noctua being his main one other reviews say the silver arrow beats the noctua by 1 or 2 degrees more importantly they say it does it while being quieter and cheaper

mhhh tricky one shame they're both so damn ugly.

I'm not sure that more fan speed equals a better cooling. If so, the NH-D14 with fans runing faster cools better than watercooling solutions.

now is as good as any-time to buy the d14, I wouldn't wait for the c14 as it is a reworked d14 only topside so unless your motherboard like the sabertooth p67 that needs a topside cooler it might be worth waiting for the c14.
