The game that got me started Thread

Hey guys, was reminiscing with a friend about my PC gaming origin story and though it would be a great idea to start a thread where we could celebrate the games that got us started on our PC gaming journey and the games that get us to continually upgrade our PCs.

My First Proper PC Game

The first game that made me really want to own a PC was the Command and Conquer Generals, being the first game that I ever played on my family PC and later my first laptop.

Most of the time I played this game was at between 15-25 FPS with lots of slow down when the action heated up, but being young and amazed by the experience I was still willing to play all the games campaigns and a lot of skirmish mode.

This game was one of my staples well into my PC gaming life, playing it on my first custom built/ home built PC in 2010. Which is a PC I had shown on the forums here, though sadly the pictures did not stand the test of time.

Rules of the thread

- Games must either be the game that got you into PC gaming, the first game you played on your first personal PC or a game that you made a major PC upgrade for. Examples are below.

- Upgraded to a HD 7950 from my GTX 460 768MB so that I could have enough vram to play Skyrim with texture mods and a higher framerate.

- Upgraded to a AMD 1090T (that I did overclock) from a Athon II 445 so that I could have shorter load times in turn changes in Empire Total War and Civilization V. (Though admittedly it was mostly so that I could run SolidWorks well for Uni )

- Images must be 700 pixels wide or less. You can link in larger versions of the images, but we want this thread to be easily read and used be those with slower internet connections.

No Major upgrade for any game specifically. First game I ever played was Age Of Empires II though.

When I played Generals I got Zero ( :D ) slowdowns except when after a while when playing multiplayer over lan after the game goes on for a while.

That was the game which got me really into games.

I Upgraded to a Nvidia 6800 I think just to play it.

It was a rice simulator and doesnt run on anything but XP and worse. Sadly the sequels were garbage.

The first game I played with my friends and got into was GTA III, then my master race friend got Vice City on his PC meanwhile I had a PS2 which I played lots, especially San Andreas. Then a friend got a PS3 with GTA IV so had to get a PS3 then later got a seriously swag laptop with a 4670m to play GTA IV with all of the HD. Then I built my first PC to play even more serious GTA IV with triple monitors which was epic eventually winding up with two GTX 780's at which point I was big into Dirt 2.

Following that I got slightly more into modding and aesthetics and switched to two 780 Classifieds for the release of GTA V, then that got delayed a bit so I did many upgrades and watercooling, for GTA V while playing it on PS3 in the meantime. When it finally came to PC I upgraded my audio kit and got a Swift. Then quite recently I got another 780 for even more ultra grass GTA V frames.

In short, GTA is life.

The game that got me started on PC gaming was Leisure Suit Larry. I'm talking years ago, before 256 colour VGA.

However, that wasn't really terribly exciting. The next big game I played was Indy Car Racing by Papyrus on my 486 in DOS along with Stunt Island.

The big breakthrough however was Direct X and how it brought some pretty serious 3D to PCs.

Sega Rally soon followed and the only consoles I had after that were the N64 and Gamecube which I didn't really use.

I can't even begin to tell you how many computers I have built for one specific game.

The game that got me started was the same as AlienALX. But the first game I ever owned was IndyCar Racing.

I was playing this game on an Amstrad 486 SX25 I couldn't hear anything as the PC only had PC speaker and the game had no support for it. Later we purchased an Adlib sound card and that brought the game to life by having engine sounds.

Then I played the Leisure Suit Larry games. Well a majority of the Sierra adventure games at that time.

That machine lasted about 2 years until it decided to no longer boot and had a HDD controller failure message.

The first Game I ever played was one of the might and magic series back in 2002 on my friends PC I then sold my Xbox to build a PC which was a pentium 3 to Play Halo =00=

it is such a shame that the rest of the franchise did not come to pc.

This was my favorite game at the time played on Commodore 64

But what really got me on the upgrade path was BF2142 and Battlefield 2

That's basically one of the first games I've ever played.

But the games that really got me into more serious gaming were probably Call of Duty 2 and GTA San Andreas.

My first 'proper' PC game was probably Midtown Madness. It was the game that really got me into PC gaming as a whole anyway. The first game that got me started into gaming itself was Myst.

Hehe I remember Myst. It looked stunning !

From CDROM on I have all of my games. So I've still got Midtown Madness 1&2 and Motocross Madness. Heh, I've even still got Daytona USA :D

My first game was Jewels of Darkness

I had an addiction to pinball games in the late 80's and Ultimate Pinball was my game of choice.

Then the flood gates opened with Airwolf, Boulderdash, Joust, Bomber Jack, Zool, Lemmings, Populous, Pole Position, Altered beast, Turrican, Impossible Mission, Elite, Prince of Persia, Rainbow Island, Space Hulk..... the list from here is almost endless.
