Taking Mayhems Pastel out after it went a bit horrible

Hey thought id do a post about my rig after it went a bit horrible and my temps went skyhigh..... i had mayhems pastel in for about 6 months probs to long for it to be in anyway, but it started to go really gloooopy and temps went from maxing out in 50's to maxing out in 80's the loop has a 17 2600k @4.7 and a 570 super overclocked in it here are some pic from before..

it wasnt looking to healthy anyway and needed a good clean, plus the last loop i did was just with bits of spare tube i had so they are different thicknesses half and 7/16ths...

also i used the tried and tested professional anti water getting into your system majig or in layman's terms an aldi carrier bag

Cleaning out was quite easy

ok so finished, worst part of it was cleaning out the xspc res what a night mare to clean they are.......... another thing i wanted to do this time was add some 90's in my loop one on the res and one on the bottom of the gfx block, next time i do it im going to get a couple of 45's for the cpu block, anyways here is a pic of the loop finished and in game temps

also please excuse the horrible 460 in the pics i need to get a little card for my other 2 monitors its the only reason its there

temps are cpu: 45c in game 57 max 35 idle
gpu: 37c -40c in game maxed 33c idle
amb 21c

What brand of tubing was that?

no idea i got given it tbh the new stuff is Masterkleer Hi-Flex 7/16" ID - 5/8" OD (11-16mm) Tubing : Clear

There are some brands of tubing that leech plasticizer horrifically with pastel. Primochill and tygon are the two I know of. My primochill was filled with a layer so thick that it looked like antiperspirant.

Although a pic of the blocks before cleaning would of been helpful.
Pastel does suffer from wall action quite badly too as anything fluid with a heavy suspension would.

BTW OP do you still have this pastel or have you drained it away? Mayhems may want to take a sample + some of the tubing for testing.

I had mayhems pastel for about 7months without changing it and I only had staining on the hoes, but it didn't go weird like yours.

ok... clear bits up :S your right should of taken pics of the pastel in the blocks when took out.. its wasnt thick like custard its was just a bit thicker than usual, also had changed colour and i was having to top it up everyweek at the end of its life as it was going down about 1cm a week in the res... couple of things that could add to the puzzle is that i dont know what brand the hose was as i got it given off someone.. so it could well have been coming off the hose, also it was originally pastel white but it went grey so i added some mayhems red dye to make it red but it made it bright pink so i added blue to make it purple then added more blue to make it blue.... it looked ok when i did it, over time it turned into this though :S also i dont have any samples for mick its all in the bin now

ive added my full system specs as my sig now aswell, also forgot to add the water now comes from halfords as its only £3.99 for 5lts going to see how it goes ive put biocide and a killcoil in so hopefully should be ok

I would take the kill coil out if you think you might ever want to send off your EK blocks for RMA. If they discover you've used a silver kill coil with their nickle they will fob you off.
According to them silver in the loop accelerates galvanic corrosion with their nickel plating. Tbf I think i have seen Koolance give the same warning but they may just be covering their asses.

Tbh I wouldn't worry about it though as in the unlikely event anything did happen, the blocks would still function long after they become old hat.

Yes EK had some study done and blamed all manner of things for their nickel blocks flaking. TBH I think it was just their crappy nickel plating at the time.

I'm pretty sure EK blocks come with warnings about this or something.. I'm sure my old supreme HF did.

Remember the water from halfords (if it's the same stuff i get) is dionized not distilled. Not a HUGE difference but worth knowing that it is in-fact different

also my temps have dropped around 10c - 15c after switching to Halfords Battery Top-Up Water

Pastel has worse thermal conductivity than water but not by 10-15c, id say that's down to the amount of plasticizer you had in the system before.
