Heya.

I've had my fun with my 7970's in crossfire now, but I want to opt for a single-card solution again, but want to retain as much power as I can.

The room my computer is in has a much higher ambient temperature than the other rooms in my house unfortunately, and last year when crossfiring in the summer, I had to ramp up all fans in my system to keep the temperatures at a reasonable level. This lead local authorities to believe that my house was some sort of military aircraft factory in disguise. *zing

I'm wondering if swapping out my 7970's for a r9 295x2 will alleviate enough temperature that I wont have to run all fans on 100%, thus a quieter experience this summer.

I've never had a 2-in-1 chip gpu before so I'm clueless.

Other options and advice is more than welcome.
Thanks in advance!

Youll get a lot more grunt but it will still need to be set up - the 295 can throttle if just fit and forgot

I can't comment on how hot two 7970's are but trust me when I say the 295X2 is hot enough to melt an iceberg!

I have to sit browsing the sexy ladies thread with no clothes on, not a good idea! (JK). :D

Which 7970s do you have? the stock ones get ridiculously hot, and if they're not stock then they're usually awful once you add more than one.

I had a pair of Palit 670 Jetstreams. Bottom card 68c. Top card 93c and was rising when I played Metro : Last Light.

I had to move one into a X4 slot, hack the drivers to get SLI running then stick two fans directly over them and I just managed to get the top card down to a balmy 83c.

IMO the 295x2 is massively cooler, and quieter.

Edit. Just seen your sig. The Lightnings are not good for multiple card configs IMO. The top card will always suffer.

Thanks a bunch on the replies.

Yeah I had that suspicion when I picked up the second card, but I got it for such a great price with it being next to new I couldn't really pass it up!

What I'll do is re-work my case, in terms of airflow, and preparing for the 295 then and get one on order I reckon.

I'm under no illusion that the 295 is some sort of stealth jaguar, don't get me wrong, but I'm mostly positive that it'll be quieter than a couple of lightnings ramping up in the warmer weather!

Once again cheers for the replies!

If you have any fans that have high static pressure it's a good idea to swap them out and replace the rad fans. Those ones are loud and better ones can be used and temps down at lower noise levels.

Interesting, I'll definitely look into that, thanks. Any particular suggestions of specific fans? I have a couple laying, but I'll have to check out their specs.
