SupremeFX X-Fi soundcard, potentially busted?

Hello once again everybody.

At some point this morning my sound card 'disappeared' according to Windows. I checked device manager and sure enough it wasn't listed under audio or other devices. Looked through the side panel and noticed the name on the side wasn't lit up as it usually is.

I've tried uninstalling all of the creative stuff that I had installed and reseating the sound card but the text still doesn't light up and windows still doesn't recognise it. I can't update the drivers for it as it's nowhere to be seen in device manager.

This sound card was an extra that came with my motherboard (Maximus III Formula) as onboard sound isn't an option.

Is there anything else I should try first or should I look into buying a new sound card?

If the light is not coming on that is a good sign that the sound card is not receiving power. so either it is not plugged in correctly (loose), or its dead.

You could try another pci slot.

I would say it's dead..... I recently had my Soundblaster die, and brought a Asus Xonar D2 - Top soundcard, would recommend if looking for a replacement

Oddly enough I was looking at getting either a set of Astro A40s or the Asus Xonar Xense sound card with the headphones by the end of the year, unfortunately I'm just over £100 short and because of AS-levels around the corner I can't work to get that extra money for a couple months.

I'll leave it until tomorrow morning on the off chance that another solution is posted but I think I'll try to get a cheap one from FS&W or Aria tomorrow (time to take advantage of the free shipping hehe).

Thanks for the suggestions both of you.

PCI-E slots 2 and 3 provide the same results.

sorry for the late post. but if it is not working in the other slots, it means the sound card is fried. What sound system are running and how loud? remember, cheap sound cards (especially cheap ones) life is drained when you hook up a high watt sound system and consistently blast it.

Creative Gigaworks T20, it's just a 2.0 system can't imagine that's drawing too many watts?

was it a cheap sound card?

Either way this stuff happens. it may be hard to believe but the sound card takes the most abuse out of all the parts of a computer (with the exception of overclockers). I would just replace it with a higher quality sound card. the one thing that i noticed with sound cards is that the more expensive it is the better it is. the ASUS Xonar should last you a while. Be happy you do not have to deal with tube amps

This is what i use with my ipod http://www.telovation.com/photos/cheap-vacuum-tube-amplifier.jpg the tubes have to be replaced quite often. new digital amps are a really nice feature!

I've bought a Xonar DG for £25 as I can't fork out the £180 right now, hopefully this one won't go bust before the end of the year.

The one I had before was actually included with the motherboard because it didn't have on board sound so I can't imagine it's the best thing in the world. ATM it's doing OK as a light paperweight for when it gets a tad hot and I turn the fan on.
