Hey guys got some decent coverage overhere and was reading my GFs post and made me begin thinking. Suppose AMD kept the buldozer architecture but just completely redesign the socket. Like what Intel did with 1366 to get 1156 or 1155 to get 2011 (i know people that there are different architectural changes with LGA2011 compare to LGA155 don't sledge me). Don't you think that this could make AMD a decent contender again?

Reason I am asking is in the Passmark benchmark the FX-8150 actually beat the i5 2500K by about 1500 points when a few days ago the i5 2500K was ahead by 285 points. Making me wonder why it sucked so much in the other benchmarks and does it actually suck in real world applications?

AND NO I DO NOT WANT TO RERUN BENCHMARKS AND DO APPLICATION TEST ALL OVER AGAIN BECAUSE DISAPPOINTMENT WAS HIGH TO SEE THE ONLY APPLICATION IT WORKED WELL IN WAS SONY VEGAS.

It seems to me, and I am by no means anything but an enthusiast (I have little to no knowledge of architecture etc.), that if AMD had spent the money they spent researching and developing Bulldozer into refining the architecture already found in Phenoms etc. they'd have yielded better results. Perhaps Bulldozer V2 shall blow us all away, but I don't have particularly high hopes.

BD was intented to work with a new motherboard

Then, it was decided to flash capable AM3 boards with a new BIOS update to accommodate the new BD chips. Most of the motherboards are based on AMD's 990FX chipset, but they also include ASRock’s 890FX Deluxe5 motherboard; it’s one of many 890FX chipset-equipped motherboards that manufacturers claim will work with Bulldozer.

Even though these motherboards work fine with the new FX range, they still do not allow its architecture to work at its fullest.

The 'old' socket FM1 (llano) will soon be replaced with a socket FM2 "Trinity" later this year.

Perhaps AMD will be able to dig themselves out of the huge hole they are in. The AM3+/FX cross was a quick way for them to make some money for further research (and was a failed attempt to compete with intel's latest).

Trinity benches have been leaked recently and can easily be found on the web

I dont think we have seen the last of the current 990fx chips. The CPU pin count on current bulldozers is the same as Phenom. But the new 990fx boards have one more pin BD is currently not using.
