Stuck on what monitor to use.

Hi,

I need a 23-24" monitor and after spending ages on forums and google have come down to 2 plus some other random one. My main problem is the Asus IPS monitor has a 14ms latency and as far as I know that's quite slow, this plus the fact the Samsung is slightly cheaper is the only thing holding me back from it.

I will use my monitor primarily for games Counterstrike, Quake, TF2, BF3 and the odd bit of video/photo editing.

the only issue with the asus ips is the 14ms refresh rate which could make games look blurry.

the samsung doesn't have a dvi connector either,

i'd go for the asus non ips for the refresh rate and a full selection of connections, or james suggestion of the iiyama
 
I thought about going for an Iliyama but since i've never seen it before Tom got some for reviews and that kinda put me off.

So you guys recommend the illiyama or the asus, right?

iiyama are one of the oldest, most reliable monitor makes around.

I think of it more though - Tom, probably the best, most influential youtube reviewer there is (I want cookies.) Can pretty much email any company and ask for a monitor to review, so basically has the choice of everything, and if after that, he still chooses to use the iiyamas, and not even for a mere couple of months, then they must be good - even when they're competing against more expensive ones.

Since I've got mine, I'm so glad I did, and I cant really see any reason to warrant spending more on one
 
I am personally slightly disappointed with my purchase from iiyama. It's not an IPS display but we're talking about the brand itself here, right?

The thin bezel was nice and the touch controls were useful but the settings were horrible to modify and there were so many things greyed out, it didn't make sense. Auto adjust was greyed out so the dedicated touch button for it didn't work either! I couldn't get a setting good enough so that some of the colours didn't look washed out or over-exposed without the screen contrast being terribly dark and murky.

But if people say this iiyama IPS is good, I'm inclined to agree with them because it's IPS. But my personal IPS choice is the Dell U2412M IPS. The reviews for the dell say 8ms response time isn't a biggie, but vthey did mention small niggles with it. So 12ms response from the Acer does look a bit sketchy!
 
I agree that some parts arent the best - the controls could be easier - although I've always found monitor controls to be awkward, and also some people say the stand is a little flimsy. Agreed it's probably not the sturdiest thing around, but as it's £40 cheaper than the Dell, it doesnt offset the price so much I'd want to buy the dell
 
Thanks, you guys have made it easy for me to decide, I think I'm going to go for the Asus mainly because it's been highly reccomended but also because it is Asus, for the name I guess, plus it looks better than the Iliyama in my opinion.

I thought that anything under 8ms response was unnoticeable to us humans? Or am I mistaken here?
That is to say, a monitor with 1ms response rating would look the same as one with an 8ms response.
 
The theory is that at 60fps (the max a 60Hz monitor can display) the monitor only needs to refresh every 12.5 or so seconds but if it can refresh faster it means that any lags or dips in fps won't be as noticeable because the monitor refreshes faster. However IMHO 1ms is just too fast and really so is 2 maybe 3. If the quake pros of the old could play at their level on 25ms monitors 5/8/14 doesn't sound nearly as bad
 
Neither, really. You WILL benefit from a 120Hz monitor in given games. Trust me. I have had 120Hz LG for about a year now, and whenever I have to game on a 60Hz monitor again, it is JUST SO SLOW and blurry, it gives me headache. My brother has my old iiyama, 23'' 1080p, and I just can't play on that anymore.. So, anything with 120Hz. It might not be as good as an IPS for movies and whatnot, but you want it for games, don't you? :)
 
And anyone who is going to try to convince others about human eye not being able to notice a difference... etc. etc. BULLSHIT, don't bother. Go, plug two monitors next to each other, play BF3 with 120fps and tell me which one you want to stay with.
