Stripped XP Installation

I've used nlite in the past to modify an XP installation. I'm looking to do an install for maximum performance (benching ), but at the same time be functional as a main system.

Does anyone have any advice or useful links for this?

What settings should be changed/ removed for the best compromise?

If any useful info comes out of it perhaps Kenny could do a 'O/S or Software Tweaking' sticky :B

Edit: Just got through it all, and it's so naked it could probably only be used for benching! I think that it'd have been better if they explained what they had done (removed/ tweaked) rather than just serving up a copy

I think I'll do my own copy with nlite - it'd be nice to know if anyone has any recomendations or advice to what they remove or keep?

It would be interesting to see if linux is better for benchmarking - different distros may be better than others (I think you can chose what to install when you set it up?)

If you move the page-file around on your hard drive you can get a 2 or 3 % performance increase. Try defragging; with bare install your probably lookinga t a 1% performance increase.

Another good tip would be to turn off anythign that you dont need, like spare pci slots and onboard sound.

Linux will be better for certain things, but 3D is definately not one of them. The lack of DirectX support is a major big flaw in this. I use Linux Gentoo custom build on my laptop atm and trying to run a VM with XP is hard enuf without DirectX.

OpenGL support isn't great either but it's getting there.

Wine will run some apps but not many at all.

You may have some better 3D luck with Cedega, but this again is an emulator so won't be great and also requires a subscription. I used to use it to play WoW on my lappy with Gentoo on.

I'd strongly advise 2 installs, one for day to day and another as a benching OS. And anyways theres always XS OS to look at..

Please dont just take XSOS....nn has had trouble with unauthorised downloads/sharing an takes any messing with it very seriously.

Arctic is working with an nLite install at the mo. I tried it a few times, but it would NOT play on an ICH chipset, RAID or no RAID.

Tiny XP v05!

Ive had a few problems with it. You can only format NFTS and when i tried to put my XP OEM disk in. It didnt recognise any drives. The iso is about 130 megabytes and installed is 390Mb (can you say iram) You will need your own XP serial to validate it.

Someone reported a boost of 3700 to 4650 after installing it.

:edit: Id definatley have a play arround with Nlite. Trial and error. Use an old HDD to start though.
