hello

im not sure if in right place so sorry if it is not.

im having a problem with my external hard drive before i had problems with my msi motherboard it was staying turned off while the pc powered up, and after while waiting on a replacement i was using my wifes biostar th61 and this did the same never powered on while pc was booting which was what i wanted, is for the hdd not powering on untill i needed it.

but not i got a asus board and for the live of me cannot stop my external hdd turning on while pc boots up. i have messed in the bios and still cannot see why it keeps powering up on bootup, i have looked in the manual and nothing in there about this.

would anyone know what i can do other than keep the hdd unplugged till i need it.

sorry if all over the place kinda in a rush

thank you for a reply.

i have done so and still same, i have disabled legacy usb 3 as well but still same im going to email asus and see what i can do.

If the external hdd gets power from the USB and does not come with a power brick, you can't stop that, but I don't understand why you want to stop it from powering up?

problem is i should not have to do that on my WD mybook i did not have this problem on 2 other motherboards.

this powers from a 12v plug i want to only have it running when i want due to it makes a noise while in use on my test. 1tb hdd's are not quiet.

This really does not make sense. With the "typical" external power source external hard drive it should be spinning up even when disconnected from the USB unless it is software or firmware controlled within the My Book. HMmm...

OKAY, I did some looking and this was hard to find, you may be screwed with that motherboard or maybe not. The following will tell you what is going on and what your motherboard has to support. I'm guessing this is what the WD My Book's use. NOTE what I highlighted in RED.

Western Digital and some other HDD makers have been offering for some time Power-up in standby (PUIS) feature in their Hard Drive product lines. This is considered Enterprise RAID product class feature, nonetheless very useful in Workstations and Desktops, including older PCs with multiple drives and weaker PSUs. It requires BIOS support. When activated, it allows to waken up non-system HDDs into Standby (non-spin) mode at PC wakeup from Standby or Hibernation. Meaning, they won't start spinning at PC wakeup right away, but instead will wait until you try to open a file saved on that HDD or save a file onto it. Otherwise the HDD will follow usual power management cycle during PC operation, meaning it will stop spinning when not accessed for a set time period.

thank you fredex for the reply

well i had a msi g43 and a biostar motherboard and none of them powered up the hhd while booting but only this asus one does it.

i have messed around the bios disabling stuff yet still no look. i have googled for few days and still not found much on this problem of mine. i think its just how it is really with this board.

What model ASUS motherboard do you have?

PUIS is also called PM2 mode (Power Management 2).
