Strange Email Received

I didn't expect this response

Just another reason that I sooooo love OC3D. Its like their people! Though I'm sure they're just little robots with android phones, they manage to make you feel like you're really talking to humans with needs, foibles, and funny blowup dolls in their closets. Just makes me all fuzzy inside.
Btw, this is a VERY common occurrence on forums, and an exasperating issue for mods and owners alike. Anyway, thank you OC3D team for being so doggone wonderful and I hope you all has one awesome day/nite.
And to all youse forumers, well, hope you are having the best day of the week.

i just got this email sending pm to sub to look at...

oh ok looks like others have exact same email..

Its not just oc3d, apparently there is a hacking thing going on just now. I just got one from member@ebay.co.uk saying lots of abuse and i checked my ebay inbox ad nothing was there. Something is defiantly going on just now.

HI all, firstly, though the origin of my example is the OC3D forums I do want to stress that this is NOT due to any actions or mistakes made by OC3D or its staff; its just what happens when there is a lot of activity on a forum.
Anyway, on to the meat of the issue.

I received this in my email today:

I never subscribed to this - xxxxx.xxxxx@gmail.com
The subject line read: Unsubscribe
.....................................................................

First btw, I have never subscribed to anything/anyone, who knows of my OC3D acct. Okay you say, what makes this a phishing attack. Well, its easy. You just click the above link next to "I never subscribed to this", and boom, your email is not only confirmed but now added to a database. Simple and precise phishing attack.
So, you see this, or something like it.... whatever you DO... DO NOT CLICK to unsubscribe, let them think the email is a deadend.

And now back to our regular program.

Just to clear this up guys and to calm people down, this isn't a phishing attack at all, the link is a mailto link and does not confirm anything. There are no embedded images to put you on any lists at all. (i've checked the raw source of the email)

All this is, in it's simplest form, is Jim's old email server forwarding someone's response to a recent newsletter than Tom sent, and for some reason it decided to forward it to a select set of people on the forum, Why? I have no idea.

The issues is now however sorted, we've moved the emails and it shouldn't happen again, I'm sorry it did in the first place, but I can assure you the person at the other end does not have your address unless you personally replied to them so please don't worry. They don't have and never will have your address, because they replied to the bounce mailbox which sent it to you.

Rest assured, We shot it in the nads and now it's fixed :)

As for something going on, there's usually a rise in spam emails just after christmas / couple other holidays every year. All the extra sending of mails and business downtime means the monkeys pickup more emails to spam and a few of the big-hitters in spam land come on-line to do their yearly phishing runs. Just keep blocking, ignoring and marking it all as spam and all will be fine.

Anyone genuinly worried about this stuff, turn off any remote-image loading in your mail program. it helps an awful lot to stop you getting put on more lists. :)

Hope this helps guys,

P.S. I've gone through and removed all mentions of the name and address of the send-e please keep them off your messages. If this person doesn't want a newsletter from us, they won't appreciate us populating a forum and search engines with their contact details. If anyone else wants to quote it please remove their name and address, thanks guys, it's only fair.
