hi guys

does anyone know how to stop Windows 10 auto update?
I have gone into settings, updates and clicked "notify"...

But still does it

I am very annoyed, I have just been sitting here for nearly 4 hours, working on my last piece of assignment for my course that in studying.
(video game development)
and literally out of nowhere, my computer just comes up with blue screen that says "installing updates" then restarts itself.

ALL MY WORK IS LOST!!!

no option to save my work before hand, is it just randomly chose to do it, without any notification

So ed off!

sorry buddy, i must not of wrote the first message correctly..

Im currently with windows 10.. but system updates are annoying..

Unlike windows 7, you can change settings, and install updates whenever you choose..

my windows 10 just did an update by itself.. Automatically forcing itself into a restart to do it.. Which caused me to lose 4 hours of hard work!

i want to disable the auto system updates, so that i pick and choose when i want them installed..

cheers

You don't have the same options as you did have in Windows 7/8.1

Unless you can find a program that can add options to Windows Update, That is one of the main reasons why i went back no control over the Updates.

From the start menu type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Then follow these steps.

Then Navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update.

Locate the “Configure Automatic Updates” setting in the right pane and double-click it. Set it to “Enabled,” and then select your preferred setting. For example, you can choose “Auto download and notify for install” or “Notify for download and notify for install.” Save the change.

Visit the Windows Update pane, click “Check for updates,” and then select “Advanced options.” You should see your new setting enforced here. You’ll also see a note saying “Some settings are managed by your organization,” informing you that these options can only be changed in Group Policy.
To disable this later, go back to the Group Policy editor, double-click the “Configure Automatic Updates” setting, and then change it from “Enabled” to “Not configured.” Save your changes, visit the Windows Update pane again, click “Check for updates,” and then select “Advanced options.” You’ll see everything change back to the default setting. (Windows Update only seems to notice the setting change after you click “Check for updates.”)

Edit: You can also just defer updates via control panel should you wish too.

Only for the folks on Pro version though. :/

Fear not though, Microsoft is probably going to bring out a way to stop the auto restarting for the updates, it's currently in their tech preview so let's hopes it comes on the stable version with the July Update
