Stevo's [Project Cocoon]

Hello!... that's always a good word to start a conversation with.

Anywho. I'm hanging like a handbag because of Tom, so to try to sober up I've decided I'll start on my build log.

gJIin.jpg

Now then, I shall tell you how it came about and a bit about it then show you pictures and the current stage its at and then what I plan to do with it.

How it came about
I like computers end of that story... "about 6 years ago, (I think) I built my first ever computer. I made tones of horrendous mistakes but non the less that computer taught me allot and lasted me a good while. then I decided it was time to build a new computer cause I wasn't happy with playing games on low - medium on a 1440x900 19" monitor. and then the journey began."

z3jeb.jpg

I know you cannot see much but I'll give you the specs:
CPU - AMD 6400+ dual core thingy
Mobo - Abit KN9 SLi
RAM - 2GB DDR2 800MHz
GFX - BFG GeForce 9600 GT OC
PSU - Antec 500W Modular
HDD - 640GB Western Digital
Case - Jeantech Aqua

Right that's enough of the back story

A bit about it
OK. so its called Project Cocoon, its called that for a reason. I personally think it has a good ring to it and reason behind it. This build started roughly a year and a half ago. At that point it was in caterpillar form "the part where its eating all my money to buy hardware" once it has eaten enough of said 'Money' and gotten fat enough "the part where its all working together" it will go into a temporary case and look messy for a while untill I can get the case and ascetics sorted out "Cocoon stage" that's the stage I'm at with it at the moment because money ran out. but that will soon be sorted and it will eventually break out of the Cocoon and turn into a beautiful butterfly. But I'm going to keep the name Cocoon because it will be an ongoing project. there's always going to be upgrades. I'm not going to leave this one for 6 years untouched...

Here's a picture of it at its current stage.

GBnOF.jpg

Here's the specs:
CPU - Intel i7 2600K
Cooler - Noctua NH-D14
Mobo - Gigabyte G1.Sniper 2_Z68
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LP (Black) 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz
GFX - Gigabyte GTX 580 SoC
PSU - Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 1000W
HDD - 1TB + 640GB
SSD - Crucial M4 64GB
Case - Xigmatek Utgard
Screen - BenQ 24" LED 1920x1080
Sound - Corsair Vengeance 2000 Wireless 7.1 Gaming Headset
Mouse - R.A.T 7 Contagion
Keyboard - Steelseries MERC

Now for lots and lots of pictures, these were all taken at different time over the last year so some of them might look to be in different quality and places. First up.

Cooler - Noctua NH-D14
I brought this cause at the time I was shit scared of water cooling, "still am a bit now" and it was the best air cooler on the market. I'm regretting this choice now though cause I cannot see anything in my case its soo god damn big !

Mobo - Gigabyte G1.Sniper 2_Z68
oohh yea this motherboard! I loved the look of it soo much. Green's my favourite colour and the black really makes it stand out. I know allot of you out there really hate this motherboard cause its gimmicky but it fits in perfect for what I'm going for.

RAM - Corsair Vengeance LP (Black) 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz
I was pretty much forced to buy this RAM cause its the only thing that would agree to be sat on by my hefty Noctua. I do plan to switch it out for some Dominator Platinum in the future though. that stuff looks the dogs dangly bits.

jaeP9.jpg

phAbz.jpg

GFX - Gigabyte GTX 580 SoC
I'am a little bit of a Nvidia fan, and when it comes to graphics I have to have the best. But I'm not a fan of SLi or Crossfire. My logic is buy the single best graphics card you can afford. + Tom gave it a Gold award so I was like YEP.

zQiFN.jpg

PSU - Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 1000W
Big mistake I know. I foolishly done did a massive overkill, and later discovered that this is not a fully modular PSU. I plan to replace this in the future with a Corsair AX750.

Gf0De.jpg

Jwsid.jpg

XUXLu.jpg

HDD - 1TB + 640GB
I do really need to get more storage. I haven't actually brought a new HDD since my old build so these drives are pretty damn old !... and full.

zPShY.jpg

SSD - Crucial M4 64GB
This is a pretty decent boot drive. I plan to get a massive SSD at some point in the future so I can store all my games on it. cause I hate load screens with a passion !

VXMZr.jpg

Case - Xigmatek Utgard
Tom lent me this case as before I was squeezing all my hardware in the old Jeantech Aqua.

bEPJW.jpg

TSLqd.jpg

JYTyC.jpg

Yea a bit of a squeeze as you can see !. but yea this is the Utgard my hardware is currently residing in. can you see now why its still a Cocoon. needs a case upgrade big time !

qaIVd.jpg

Screen - BenQ 24" LED 1920x1080
Well you see I was using a 1440x900 before and it was getting a little bit blurry to be honest. everytime I'd play a game round a friends house it would look so crisp. and then I'd go home to play on mine and I'd cry inside trying to get used to it. and I wanted it white because thats all apart of the bigger picture.

fznq0.jpg

Sound - Corsair Vengeance 2000 Wireless 7.1 Gaming Headset
Absolutely love this headset, just being able to walk around my flat on Skype or listening to music spinning around in my chair not getting tangled up. the clarity is soo nice and bass is deep.

4GpsN.jpg

Mouse - R.A.T 7 Contagion
White again for the big picture, as you can guess I've been influenced by Tom and have taken a massive liking to White stuff. and this mouse is good because you can adjust it to fit your hand perfectly. its soo comfortable. perfect for the way I game

ZpRzh.jpg

BTKkH.jpg

Keyboard - Steelseries MERC
This is a Temporary keyboard Tom lent me cause my old one basically didn't work any more. I do plan to get a new keyboard but the market at the moment doesn't seem to have anything I really like.

Congratulations if your still here and reading, this is probably the longest post I've ever done.

For Christmas Santa Tom got me some Bitfenix Alchemy Cables in Green, So for my first update. probably just before the new year I will take some snaps of me cleaning up my cable management in the Utgard. Tom has also got something planned for the case too. A while ago if your following Tinytomlogans facebook page you will have seen that he gave me a CaseLabs SM8 in white ! so eventually the plan will be White, Black and Green.

Thanks for taking your time to see what's going on. and I cannot wait for this to start taking shape.

Definitely looks promising, Stevo, will look forward to updates. I do have a softspot for the 'gimmicky' motherboard - love the green accents.

Ok, It's been a long time since I've posted. But I thought I'd do an update.

Since Christmas I lost my job. so most of the plans have changed. but for the most part the custom water cooling loop idea is kinda on hold. I need to get more balls before I think about it, and probably a job too as it's not cheap stuff.

But anywho I'll just throw the update at you, we decided to switch the Case Labs SM8 out for a Nanoxia DS1 in white with the window panel, because there really is no point using a SM8 for a H100, the case is far too big for that.

Right time to roll out the pictures. there are not many and there probably of bad quality as i do not posses a camera, I just used my GF's phone :P

me fitting the H100

I don't exactly know where it will go from here. the updates may be very long winded but I'll try my best to keep you upto date. even with the small stuff like sorting the cable management on the back. sorry it's not much but hope you liked looking at my little piece of heaven.

Those motherboards are just so god damn sexy.

I really like the poison green/black color scheme. Not the usual red/black (or, if you're EVGA: salmon pink/black ).

But as someone who actually has guns and did mil service, putting some make-believe thingy on a M/B is just kinda... pathetic, to be honest. But that's just my personal taste in this matter and of course does not take away from the actual performance/quality of the product.

I won't tell someone they're not supposed to like the heatsink just because I don't. And I'd still consider buying one of these M/B (I lusted so heavily after the original Assassin, I admittedly got a little tech stiffy :lol:). One tasteless heatsink does not a bad product make, after all.

Anyway, enough of that, because I actually really bloody like the build and what it's turning into! :)

Sucks about your job, hope you find something new soon!

The z77 model comes with nicer heatsinks (imo) :)

Just looked it up, and totally agree! Let's hope they keep it that way for future products in this line.

Just noticed: This 580 is one bloody awesome card! Shame the window is too short to display it in its full glory. Then again, this of course depends on your viewing angle.

Yeah the window in my opinion could be a little larger. I've already thought that maybe i should cut myself a bigger one using the original windowless side panel that comes with the Nanoxia. But I'm going to need to plan it right or I'll probably just screw it up. so lots of research and question hunting before I try something like that.

I today put in some NZXT white LED's to brighten the mood in there. not sure if there permanent yet or just a stepping stone. but I think white LED's are a safe choice.

This is with my screen slightly rotated out of the way and pushed back.

A slighlty closer look.

VbhnULy.jpg

And even closer look.

6u7klzO.jpg

Again really sorry for the awful image quality lately. I've been using my GF's blackberry and my flatmates Iphone... that explains it all really !

My photography and steady hands gets slightly better with this update, Today I've had a fiddle with the cable management, installed the last of my Bitfenix green alchemy cables, flipped the back exhaust fan to give the case higher air pressure and used the dust filter from the original case side panel and sneakily screwed it on the back :) any who lets have a look see at the pictures.

Back fan flipped as I'm not running a Air cooler on my CPU.

RvuvinL.jpg

The dust filter i stole from the original side panel, notice it's too big and going to obstruct the side panel. :(

Got the 6 & 8-Pin PCI-E power connectors all green Bitfenix alchemied too !

8-pin CPU power + hidden dust i missed!

The tidiest cable management you ever did see

3HJq0LI.jpg

Well at least it doesn't look too bad from the front. although for some reason i can still see room for improvement, I just need to figure out what !

nboUztv.jpg

Lights, Camera.. PC!

6rOJwiw.jpg

The nice little green power LED, a lovely addition. one that came naturally with the nanoxia which is great!

eVRvre0.jpg

I had to unscrew the two screws closest to the side panel as they obstruct the side panel. Put the side panel on then screw it back down. abit of a pain in the ass but worth the hassel because i wont have loads of dust. every intake is covered !

drUceB8.jpg

And that is all till next time. I'll keep you updated in the future when anything gets added or changed !

Hi Stevo,
Fine job on the build , it looks quite nice.
I like your color scheme with the white , black and green.
I wish you luck on finding a new job and I hope things get better for you.
