Steve - The 3D design/animation workstation

Heya guys! I'm new here.. So I figured I'd join the madness.

My current 3570k rig is getting on a bit.. Even with the AMD 290Tri-x upgrade last year. It's done ok as I've learnt how 3D design and printing works... But yeah. Old. Thus Steve was born.

5960x CPU.
32gb DDR4 - probably G.skill 2400MHz.
Nvidia GTX Titan X
Sabertooth X99 motherboard.
Intel 730 series 240gb SSD for the boot/gaming drive. Blame Linus...
Samsung 850 Pro 512gb SSD for a working drive.
Corsair 780T case.
Corsair HX850i 80 Plus Platinum 850W Power Supply.
Fractal Design kelvin S36 AIO Might rig another in the loop up for cooling the Titan at some point.

I'd love to throw in an NVME M.2 stick for faster work at some point as well after they start coming to stores. Or even one of the current SM951's reviewed by Tom recently.
Mass storage is going to happen on the elder rig and a bunch of WD green HDD's via a gigabit connection between my desk and the old rigs new location next to the tv downstairs.

Weird thing... I won a Samsung S34E790C 34" 4k curved screen via a Samsung Aust Competition on Friday... Along with the 850 Pro SSD. So looks as if this rig will be almost utterly perfect for my work, gaming and some super sneaky CGI Trek that's coming in the future.
I've won things before... Its just most of them have been of the ''oh sorry you'll have to take these pills for the rest of your life'' variety. Happy days!

Still waiting on the Sabertooth to make it to Australia... Should be here mid way through next month according to the stores.
Save for the competition win all of its been paid for with Star Trek prop commission work. Not bad really. Almost proud of myself.

Gaming wise it'll probably only be running ARMA3(+mods), Star Wars Battlefront when it comes and STO. Grey goo as well, but its not as if that's a particularly intensive game.

Pictures or it didn't happen... And of course more to follow once its finished and up and running.

Ooooo, another 3D designer!
What programs will Steve be running?

3DS, Maya, probably, After effects. Blender probably.
I'm aiming towards doing a fairly serious animation project later in the year, just need to do a lot of learning between now and then... Safe to say I've not played with animation since like powerpoint as a kid :p

Are you any good at rigging car suspension? I'm smashing my head off the desk here, trying to rig my truck for Assetto Corsa, we have the physics nailed and 2 different style models made.. I just can't get my head around the parenting and child heirarcy it's a huge mind fart for me.

Anyway back on topic, your rig is going to be a monster poly smasher I'm seriously jelous right now..

Haha nope sorry, wouldn't even know where to start...
Like I said, animation is rather new to me. I've spent far more of my time in the 3D world making static props for 3D printing.
And thanks! I've really quite excited to see what it can do once I've got it finished.

Dat graphics card ... gotta ask though, did you take the "Earth" in the location bit after me? ;) ^_^

Heh, apologies, no. Being a Trek fan... And a part time astronomy nerd I always list the planet of origin on forums :P
Pale Blue Dot etc etc.

Hehe, fair enough dude... just thought it was funny since as far as I know, no one on here has written "Earth" specifically, other than myself :p

Well! The curved screen arrived. I might be slightly in shock about it.
Its rather glorious. Now all I need to do is make some 4k content to watch on it. :P
Added a Logitech MX Master mouse(and an aluminium pad), its interesting... Not quite as refined as I would've thought. Drivers and software still need a lot of polishing IMO. Feels nice though.
Still waiting for the sabertooth mobo to float over... So the builds just sitting around incomplete.

Cable management... grumblegrumble. Gotta get longer a DVI cable for the 24" grumble.

Very nice. I almost bought that exact same desk before I remember what a sod glass is to keep clean :D

He he fellow Blender user ;)

And here is the model being thrashed in Assetto Corsa, (no animations yet though :()

Shiny!
I'll admit, I know nothing about cars, even less about the racing variety. So excuse me whilst I giggle about how bobbly that was :P
Blender... Probably a bad thing that I'm still most comfortable mesh editing in it compared to Maya and 3ds...

----------------------

Finally! Finished.
Not entirely unhappy with how it looks.

Having some weird issues with the tv saying that its running 1080p but actually not doing it at all... Not entirely sure whats going on there, might be the HDMI connection. And some even more wonderful purple lines and specks on the DVI'd 24" monitor... ahh.
Did get a new dvi cable that is quite possibly far too long.. perhaps its slightly frakked.
