In the UK though, it is generally considered that the 21st of June (Summer Solstice) is the start of Summer.

Hmmm! if 21st of June is the summer solstice, then the earth must be closest to the sun = hottest day.
the hottest day must be at the height of summertime, and so must be the middle of summer.
365/4 = 91.25
the middle of 91.25days = ~45
21st of June - 45days = approx 7th of may
so... the 7th of may is the beginning of summer

the earth travels around the sun in a parabolic orbit
if we are at the closest distance on ~21st june, then we must be at the apex of the curve, and therefore the earth will be at roughly the same distance from the sun on the 20th and 22nd, the 19th and 23rd, etc...
so, (you all ask!!!) why does it get warmer after the 21st june ?
answer: as the earth was travelling away from the sun (autumn and part-winter) it cooled, and it takes the same amount of time to heat back up again on its' journey nearing the sun.
also, as the sun heats and cools our planet, the earth expands and contracts.
the atmosphere does this more so, and as it expands, it thins and warms, giving less chance of cloud cover, and less dense air :: lets more heat through
the reverse of this is obvious, so i will not explain it as it is basic science.
... and don't even get me started on the faults of the gregorian calendar - lol

I still like the simplistic view that I used to get as a child:
Spring is March, April and May
Summer is June, July and August
Autummn is September, October and November
Winter is December, January and February
But yes, no more cosmology talk! Back to the cards and the compo at hand!

The reason it has gone off topic is there is no sign of winners being announced.
Not to sound ungrateful or anything, because I really do appreciate Overclock3D and MSI for arranging this competition. However my constructive criticism would be that this could all be avoided by listing a date for the winners to be picked and then a date and time for it to be announced.
Yes the staff are very busy and I understand that, but when you set down a date for it to be announced it allows you to schedule around it.

Most things were that simple when we're children.
In South Wales, atleast, it seems to be November->March=Winter, March->November=Autumn. For one or two weeks in May->September we will get Summer.

that's what i meant - i couldn't find the right word (in a mind block). you now... when it is on the tip-of-your-tongue, and you cannot think of it, even if your life depended on it!
the human race is self-centered, and we consider ourselves to be the cause of everything. just because we have been doing things a certain way for only a few thousand years, does not mean it is correct! we are but infants in our evolution, and like infants... very niave!
until a few hundred years ago, the earth was flat and the sun revolved around the earth
perhaps, it will be the winners of this comp'! but, alas, my crystal ball is clouded... for now!

they are correct. the earth DOES revolve around the sun... it is just, that the sun shines out of my butt - lmfao
comming home after a few long and hard days, and then reading this topic to finish with this post.
God it instantly made me feel better. thx for making me smile like it did.
its also pretty well known that in the uk after the summer solstice the weather goes to crap
